Paul died on July 4th, 2022 at the age of 79, after living almost four years with pancreatic cancer. He was born on April 14th, 1943 in Queens, New York City to Robert and Marie (Thek) Wheeler.
Paul leaves behind his loving wife Mary Anne, son Michael (Gretchen), and grandson Aiden. He will be greatly missed.
Paul was predeceased by his parents and older brother Robert (Bob or Bobby to him). Robert left his wife Vera and two children, Daniel and Natasha.
Paul grew up in Queens and later Rockville Centre, Long Island, New York. He attended St. Agnes school and high school. After high school, he attended college at the Cooper Union in Manhattan, earned a B. Sc. in Civil Engineering. Following that, he attended Northwestern University, where he graduated with a Ph. D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. After graduation, he worked for Chrysler Corporation and later General Dynamics, where he rose to the Chief Engineer level.
Paul loved travel and participating in sports. He organized independent tours to exotic places like China, Southern Africa, and India with his wife and travel friends. His passion was running, and when younger he ran many marathons, being especially proud of qualifying for and then competing in the Boston Marathon. As he aged, half-marathons, then 10k's, and finally walking sufficed.
Paul was a great and devoted husband and father. He was a faithful Catholic who was always kind and helped out wherever he could in a humble way.
Funeral Mass Wednesday, July 13, 2022, 10:00am, at Holy Name Catholic Church, 630 Harmon, Birmingham. Visitation at Church begins at 9:30am
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 1500 Rosecrans Ave, Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266, are welcome. Email info at pancan.org
