Peggy Christa Obituary

Peggy Hughes Christa, 86, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on June 24, 2025.

Funeral services will be Sunday, June 29, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Athens, Georgia with a reception to follow. Graveside Services for family only will follow at 4:30PM at Oconee Hill Cemetery.

A native of Acworth, GA, Peggy was a daughter of the late Robert A. Hughes and Laura McLain Hughes. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Bobby Phillips; brother, Jim Hughes; and brother-in-law, Terry Davis.

Peggy was a graduate from one of the last classes of Acworth High School and attended Georgia State College for Women (GSCW) in Milledgeville for two years, where she was active in the Madrigal A Cappella Singing Group. Peggy transferred to The University of Georgia and became a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. While at The University, she met her husband of sixty-three years, Frank. Interestingly enough, Peggy and Frank's two children and grandchildren, would all meet their spouses while attending the University of Georgia!

Peggy taught school in Cobb County before becoming a stay-at-home Mom, while living in Smyrna, GA. In 1985, Peggy and Frank returned to Athens where she was instrumental in supporting her husband Frank establish The Bank of Georgia in Watkinsville. Peggy returned to the classroom at Statham Elementary School, where she remained until retirement.

A lifelong learner and teacher, Peggy also enjoyed traveling. She and Frank visited many places in the United States and Canada, as well as forty-three countries worldwide. She was an avid UGA Bulldog fan and attended all home football games from 1965 until 2020. She was very involved in all of her kid's activities, academics and sports. She loved vacationing in Sarasota, FL and especially enjoyed spending time with her beloved family and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Frank; two children, Cathy (Jim) Martin of Roswell and Michael (Claire) Christa of Powder Springs; grandchildren, Jake (fiancé, Angeline Seames), Mac (Kat) Martin, Connor (Graham) Kington and Caitlin Christa; two great granddaughters, Walker and Naomi; sister, Marie Davis; sister-in-law, Nell Hughes; Brother-in-law Walter Christa and sister-in-law Helen Orbann and their families and a number of loving nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church 498 Prince Avenue in Athens, Georgia.
