Peggy Funderburke Obituary

Published by Legacy on Sep. 11, 2025.
West Sand Lake - Rev. Peggy Funderburke passed away suddenly, August 20, 2025 at her residence. She was the granddaughter of a Methodist Circuit-Riding Minister who served southwest Georgia. She was born on June 18, 1950, in Albany, Georgia. Her father served in the U. S. Air Force for 33 years. This employment caused the family to move every two to three years. Peggy received her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Education and Administration from Arkansas State University. She taught third grade for three years in DeWitt, Arkansas. In 1977, Peggy moved to New York City. In 1980, she and two partners founded Triangle Fire Protection Corp.; a fire protection and suppression company working in high-rise buildings in and around Manhattan. Peggy was the only woman in New York City in 1980 to have a controlling role in a construction company that was a union shop. Peggy held this position for the next 23 years. Peggy retired from Triangle to begin a new Calling to be a Minister of Word and Sacrament in 2003. She attended New Brunswick Theological Seminary and graduated Magna Cum Laude in May of 2006. In June, 2006, she was hired as the Associate Pastoral Care Minister for Marble Collegiate's congregation in Manhattan and received her Ordination there. In August, 2008, Peggy left New York City to accept a Call to minister at Bethany Reformed Church in Albany, New York. Since arriving in Albany, she had become associated with SHOW, Inc. (a non-profit for incarcerated women), the Classis of Albany, and the Capital Area Council of Churches. In September 2018, Pastor Peggy and Bethany Reformed Church were awarded The Community Service Award by Family Promise for their assistance working towards ending homelessness in Albany, NY.

Peggy is survived by four nephews, Christopher, Brian, Tyler and Austin Funderburke and was predeceased by her parents, Jefferson Lee and Annie Louise Johnson Funderburke and two brothers, Larry and Randy Funderburke.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a time to be announced at the Greenbush Reformed Church, 688 Columbia Turnpike, East Greenbush, NY 12061.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the New Brunswick Theological Seminary - Center for Reformed Studies 35 Seminary Place New Brunswick, NJ 08901. We recommend using the brycefuneralhome.com website to share or send condolences, light a candle or for service directions.
