Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fletcher Funeral Home on Oct. 1, 2025.
Peggy Darlene (Stanley) Henery, age 90, of Cyril, Oklahoma, went to her Heavenly Home on September 6, 2025, after passing peacefully in the comfort of her earthly home, surrounded by family that loved her so very much.
Peggy was born on July 24, 1935, in
Fletcher, Oklahoma, to Austin "Buster" Travis Stanley and Vellabe Ester (Mahan) Stanley. Growing up, her father lovingly called her "Baby Doll" and helped fuel a lifelong love of reading by bringing her a daily copy of the Lawton Constitution. She loved to read! Newspapers, magazines, cookbooks, you name it, she was reading it! Peggy cherished memories of going to the movies on Saturdays in Fletcher with her dad and sisters. When her family moved into a new house, she had the privilege of having her very own room where she enjoyed keeping everything clean and tidy, characteristics that her daughters and grandchildren undoubtedly inherited!
Peggy graduated from Fletcher High School in 1954. After high school, she married the love of her life, Vel Dean Henery, on February 19, 1955, in Cyril, Oklahoma. They were married and loved one another unconditionally for 63 years before Vel passed in 2018.
Peggy worked at Security Bank in Lawton, Oklahoma, and cleaned houses, but the job she treasured most was caring for her family. She loved her family so much, and she especially showed her love through food. She was always trying to feed somebody! Nobody ate better than her grandkids, who walked to Grandma's house for lunch during school and stopped at her house for pregame meals! Her mashed potatoes, creamed corn, buttered bread, and cabbage/sausage were some of their favorites! She also enjoyed riding around the farm scouting for wild pigs and checking on the cattle. She loved sports too. From her great-grandchildren's events to the Kansas City Chiefs, she was tuned in and ready to watch.
She had an incredible talent where she could look at you and know immediately what you needed or what had changed. If you were hungry, she knew. If you were tired, she knew. If you had a new outfit or newly "frosted" hair, she knew! She gave the best, most sincere compliments. She loved being polished and proper. Her unsuspecting wit and gentle honesty kept her family laughing. Many thanks to her favorite lady at the "beauty shop", Teena, for making her look and feel beautiful!
Beyond the delicious food, the witty compliments, and the love she shared, Peggy's greatest legacy is her daughters. Raising three beautiful daughters who love the Lord, who give and sacrifice of themselves until there is nothing left, who have taught their families to do the same, and who continue building upon a legacy that was so lovingly left for them.
Peggy is survived by her three daughters, Connie Lutonsky and husband Mark, Jann Miller and husband Ralph, and Christy Johnson and husband Patrick; six grandchildren: Colleen Gallimore and husband Nathan, Amber Jilek and husband Jeff, Josh Wilson and wife Rhianon, Luke Lutonsky and wife Taylor, Zach Johnson and fiancée Kelsie, and Sydney Dees and husband Jake; 11 great-grandchildren: Hudson, Jalynn, Faith, Knox, Adalynn, Tegan, Zoey, Cash, Charlotte, Logan, and Jaxton; and sister Patricia McPherson.
She was preceded in death by her husband Vel Dean Henery, sisters Betty Bowman and Judy McClure, and infant brother Eddie Lee Stanley.
The family gives special thanks to Complete Home Health and Hospice for their support and care during these final weeks. The family also extends their deepest gratitude to Dr. Jay Belt for all the years and all the ways he cared for Peggy and the family. His kindness will never be forgotten.
Funeral service will be held 10:00am Thursday, September 11, 2025, at the First Baptist Church of Cyril with Pastors Mike Flanagan and Denis Hammit officiating. Burial will follow at Celestial Gardens Cemetery of Cyril under the direction of Fletcher Funeral Home. Visitation will be come-and-go on Wednesday, September 10, 2025 from 10:00am to 8:00pm at Fletcher Funeral Home.
