It is with deep respect and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Peter Barraco Sr., at the age of 90 years old, a beloved father, grandfather, great- grandfather, and a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corp, who departed this life on Friday June 13, 2025.
Born on November 1, 1934 in Norco, Louisiana to Christine and Peter Barraco. Preceded in death was his older brother John Barraco. Peter answered the call of duty at a young age, serving his country with honor and courage during the Korean War. As a member of the Marines, he demonstrated unwavering bravery and dedication in defense of freedom and the values he held dear. His military service was a source of lifelong pride, and he remained a committed patriot throughout his life.
Following his honorable discharge, Peter returned home to build a life rooted in hard work, love, and service to others. Upon returning to civilian life he worked in the construction industry for 25 years. Later, he found passion in working for St. Charles Parish Sheriff's office and he proudly retired after years of service. In his retirement years his passion became travelling with his wife, fishing at his camp in Leeville, and a sports fan of horses, baseball and the New Orleans Saints. Above all, he cherished his family, instilling in them the same strength, integrity, and compassion that guided his own life.
Peter was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Phyllis Joan Mayhall Barraco, with whom he shared a lifetime of adventures and partnership. He is survived by his children: Peter R. Jr. (Renee), Patricia J. (Barry) Bourgeois, and Phillip M. (DawnMarie), Preston M. and Paul C., Patrick (Allison) Barraco. Grandfather of seven grandchildren: Phillip M. "Mikie" (Jennifer) Barraco, Courtney Bourgeois (Chris) Plauché, Amber L. Bourgeois (Brandon) Rogers, Gabrielle C. Barraco (Gideon) Daniels, Grayson P. (Kelsey), Gabe M. and Gianna R. Barraco, and five great- grandchildren: Dane M., Jett M. Barraco, Chevy A. Plauché, Stella E. and Sophia G. Rogers.
A funeral service with military honors will be held on Thursday July 10, 2025 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 13396 River Road, Destrehan. The family will be welcoming guests from 10:30 to 11:30, followed by the celebration of a Catholic Mass.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Paul Barraco, beloved son of Peter, whose exceptional care and devotion over the past 15 years, brought comfort, dignity and love to Peter's life. Preston Barraco could never be found without his "Pops", bringing him coffee and cereal every morning. A special thanks to Guardian Angel Hospice, especially Maria for her compassionate care and support during Peter's final days. Finally, a heartfelt thank you to the Veteran's Hospital in New Orleans who recognized Peter's greatness and pride in serving as a Korean War veteran.
