Peter Batts Obituary

Published by Legacy from Jul. 23 to Jul. 28, 2025.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Peter Marvin Batts, affectionately known to many as a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Peter peacefully departed this world on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the age of 92, from his residence in Maplegrove, Minnesota. Born in the vibrant city of Detroit, Michigan, on Thursday, April 20, 1933, Peter spent the majority of his life in the Detroit area, aside from a notable three years serving in the U.S. Army in Germany. It was during this time overseas that Peter met his beloved future wife, Marlene Hagelund. Upon his return to the States, he applied his skills as a rough carpenter, then rose through the ranks to become a respected mechanical designer. Peter's life was marked by his unwavering faith and devotion to service. He was an active member of only two churches throughout his lifetime, where he held roles as a deacon, elder, trustee, and choir member. His dedication to community extended to his role as treasurer on the board of the Grosse Pointe Christian Day School. A man of industrious spirit, Peter found joy in both his professional achievements and Christian service, as well as in cultivating a loving and orderly home. In his later years, he found new passions in golf and speed-skating, exemplifying his zest for life and commitment to an active lifestyle. Peter was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Cornelia (Leys) Batts; his siblings, Howard Jr., Martin, and Cornelia (Van Duinen); his brothers-in-law, Roger Van Duinen and Vincent Dahle; sisters-in-law, Edna (Hagelund) Swenson and Ann (Ferwerda) Batts; and his dear wife, Marlene (Hagelund). He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories in the hearts of his surviving family, including his son Kenneth (Lori) Batts; daughter Janet (Steven) Cary; and his grandchildren Lindsey (Marcus) Syverson, Jeff (Stephanie) Batts, Alex (Emily) Batts, Suzannah (Patrick) Pieszala, Katherine (Nicholas) Mineo, along with fourteen great-grandchildren. Peter's family will receive friends and other relatives on Saturday, August 2, 2025 from 10 am until 11 am at Knox Presbyterian Church, 25700 Crocker Blvd, Harrison Township, Michigan 48045. Peter will be remembered for his steadfast faith, strength of character, and the unconditional love he gave to family and friends. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
