Peter Clancy Obituary
Peter John Clancy aka Sailor Pete. Pete was born on January 12, 1940 in upstate New York to Charles Willard and Marjorie May (Memaw) Clancy. Pete unexpectedly passed away the day after Christmas this year when he was on an evening walk with his wife of 63 years Dianne T. (Renuart) Clancy in Palmetto Bay, his home for over 50 years. Pete grew up in upstate New York after his father died in a flight training accident during World War II when he was 5 years old. Pete attended four different high schools in multiple states before attending the University of Miami, where he was a member of the ROTC and proud member, president and long-time alumni advisor for his fraternity SAE. Pete was always a very proud Cane. Pete obtained his accounting degree and worked in the accounting field for many years at Thompson Aircraft, NASA, Peat Marwick Mitchell and Spear Safer. During his younger years Pete also took a year's sabbatical from accounting with his wife and two young children and sold all their possessions and travelled around Europe and visited virtually every corner of the continent in a Volkswagen bus he purchased for the trip. After his many years in accounting Pete entered the property management field with SES Group where he managed many multifamily apartment buildings and warehouses throughout Florida until his retirement. During his property management period, Pete was a long-time member and officer of the local chapter IREM.
Pete was an avid sailor for many years having won or placed in several local regattas from the Columbus Day regatta that he won as well as the Lime Cup, Miami Key Largo and Conch Cup to name a few. Over the years he was a member and officer of University Yacht Club, Matheson Hammock Yacht Club and most recently Black Point Yacht Club. One of his favorite races was the Miami to Bimini race where he sailed to Bimini on his French Kelt with his son PJ and his son's friends where they stayed in the Hemingway room at the Big Game Club. Many a weekend was spent on Biscayne Bay on one of his many boats (sailing and motor) that he had over the years. In addition to sailing Pete did carpentry, making hatch cover tables from WWII ships and nautical lamps from ship blocks. He had a wide circle of longtime friends that always had an event whether it was the Miami Ski Club, Gator V8's, Miami Hurricane alums and in retirement his boys' weekly breakfasts and lunches. Pete's biggest passion both before and once retired was his grandchildren, where he rarely if ever missed a game or school event whether it was baseball, football, soccer, basketball, tennis, sailing, Taekwondo or any other athletic or academic pursuit. He was by far their biggest fan.
Pete is predeceased by his beloved mom, Marjorie Kelly and younger sister Michelle. Pete leaves behind his wife Dianne Theresa (Renuart) Clancy, his sister Patty Clarke and two children Laurel Ann (Clancy) Auerbacher (Mark) in Palmetto Bay, Florida and PJ Clancy (Lenoir) in St. Petersburg, Florida. In addition to his two children, Pete is survived by his 6 grandchildren, Brendan Peter Auerbacher, Nicholas Mark Auerbacher, Macy Michelle Auerbacher, Avery Clancy, Aaron Clancy and Allison Clancy. There will be a service for Pete on Monday January 12th, which would have been his 86th birthday, at Holy Rosary St. Richards Catholic Church 7500 SW 152nd Street, Palmetto Bay starting at 11 a.m. followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that donations be made to Shake-A-Leg Miami in Coconut Grove, Florida.
