Obituary of Peter Bernard Flemister, MD

Peter "Doc" Bernard Flemister, MD is the third child born to missionary parents, Robert and Sarah Flemister in Liberia, West Africa on May 2, 1961.  His formative years were spent living on the mission field. As a youngster, of 6 years old he gave his heart and life to Jesus and never regretted that choice. It was indeed the power of God that enabled him to be a man of prayer and intercession during the most challenging times of his life.

Peter transferred  from Cuttington University College in Liberia to Lee College in Cleveland, Tennessee, USA in 1979 when his parents were recalled from the missionary field after 25 years of service.  He graduated from Lee College in 1983 with a degree in Biology & Chemistry.  Returning to New York where his family now lived, he was accepted into medical school at New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York in the class of 1987.  This started the most intense and faith-shaking 6 years of his life.

After graduating from medical school and completing residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (1993), Dr. Flemister worked at Westchester County Medical Center as a Clinical Instructor and Assistant Attending.  He opened a private practice in White Plains, NY.  He then went to work at Columbia University Medical Center – Harlem Hospital as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Rehabilitation.  As his career flourished he was named Chief of the Division of Rehabilitation Medicine and the Director of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and also served as the President of the Medical Board.

In 1993, when he received his medical license he brought it into his church, The Youth Mission of Life, and publicly dedicated it to the Lord.  He became known as "the church's doctor" and whether it was a preschooler with a bump on the knee or a senior with a chronic illness Doc was only a phone call away.  Distance or time was not a factor to serving those in need.

He willingly extended his resources to neighbors, friends, and anyone he heard of that requested medical advice or assistance.  His kindness, compassion and gentleness endeared him to his patients and colleagues.  His medical career flourished as he did not think of it only as an occupation to provide for his family, but also as a ministry to help anyone who passed his way.

The Hippocratic Oath, which was written 2,500 years ago, set the guidelines for physicians to minister to, protect, and care for mankind and it is still held in esteem today.  When Dr. Flemister took this oath, he meant every word of it and his life exemplified this as he cared not only for the body but also ministered to the spiritual needs of those he encountered.

Doc's favorite scripture verse, Isaiah 40:31, represents his thoughts:  "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."  Throughout his life he truly "soared" and was an unfailing believer.  He enjoyed traveling with his "co-pilot" Euni, after he taught her how to read a map.  He made the best of everything and looked forward to trips of driving cross country in classic cars or taking photos with his camera which was never very far away.  Realizing that every day is a gift from God, his kidney transplant 6 years ago afforded him the opportunity to enjoy the gift of life.  His picture taking reflected God's manifestation in nature with sunrises and sunsets.

When Peter and "Euni", as he lovingly called his wife, were married almost 33 years ago, their prayer was that, with one voice they would be a glory to God; and in sickness and in health their bands of love grew tighter.

His brother, Phillip, preceded him in death.  Left to cherish his precious memory, besides his beloved wife are: His mother-in-law, Florine Mosley; his sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Michael; his brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Katherine; his brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Stella; and his sister-in-law, Janice; his uncle Clifton and aunts Joyce, Mary, and Helen and Abby, Emma and Miama; along with many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, friends, neighbors and colleagues, too many to call by name, who came to know and love him dearly.

Also mourning their loss is his Pastor and brother-in-law and traveling companions Elder William Mosley and spouse Elder Deborah Mosley, the Tuesday Prayer Team, and his church family, The Youth Mission of Life. On the morning of June 21, 2021 Dr. Flemister took his final flight and soared into the arms of His Heavenly Father who afforded and had given Him the grace that he needed for each day. We loved him dearly, but God loved him even more.  Sleep on, "Doc", you deserve your rest.  Well done, Doc, Mission Accomplished.
