Beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and friend to many, Dr. Peter S. Grosewald passed away after a brief illness on February 21, 2023. Peter was born to Irving and Fan (Pritch) Grosewald on May 26, 1937 in the Bronx, NY. Peter received his Bachelor of Science from City College in Manhattan, NY. The next day he married the love of his life, Carole Ann Grosewald (Weintraub) on June 18, 1959. Peter continued his education earning his Masters of Science from The University of Florida, Gainesville, in 1961 and then his PhD in Physics from Penn State in 1965.
Peter was the loving father to Gillian Raye and her husband, Steven, of Wantage, NJ and Corey Grosewald of Brentwood, CA. His love grew stronger when he became a grandfather to his grandchildren, Ryan Raye and Erika Raye. Peter and Carole raised their children in Putnam Valley, NY where they lived for 30 years before they took their lives on the road with their COW (Condo on Wheels). Together they traveled most of the US in a motorhome for three years until Carole passed away suddenly. Peter continued traveling until 2016 before settling in Boynton Beach, FL.
Peter began his career in Solid State Physics with Airco-Speer, later continuing his work at IBM, where he retired after 25 years in the industry. He worked in many departments while with IBM and holds many patents earned during his employment. His love of knowledge brought him to teaching, first in IBM's University Education Program, then at NJIT both in Sweden and New Jersey, and was an adjunct professor at Pace University in New York.
Peter and Carole brought their children up to understand the importance of volunteering and never said no when they were asked to join an organization. Peter was a devoted member of the Putnam Valley Volunteer Ambulance Corps where he was a riding member as an EMT for 28 years. He served as President and Board Chairman and is a life member. He was also a member of the League of Women Voters, PTA, Putnam Valley Historical Society, and was President of the Putnam Valley Library Board. In addition, they were members of the IBM Gourmet Club.
As a resident at Venetian Isles, in Boynton Beach, FL, he formed the Culture Club and was a founding member of the Dine Around Club. He loved spending time on his computer, traveling internationally, and was a connoisseur of wine. "Uncle" Pete could always be found on the floor playing with everyone's children and pets. His love of animals was passed on to the next two generations.
While at City College he formed many lifetime friendships as a member of Kappa Rho Tau. Peter served as treasurer of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and received the IEEE Meritorious Service Citation in 1994. He was also a member of the American Physical Society.
In lieu of flowers, his family is asking that donations be made in memory of Pete to the Putnam Valley Volunteer Ambulance Corps at PO Box 141, Putnam Valley, NY 10579 or online at https://www.pvvac.org/
