Peter Hinrichs Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hobbs Funeral Home - Scarborough on Feb. 12, 2026.
Peter Hinrichs (1929 – 2026)

Born October 1, 1929, died February 5, 2026, age 96, resident of Scarborough. Peter was born in Queens NY to Anna (Keller) and Peter Hinrichs. He was raised on Long Island NY. Formative experience was working on a farm ton land hat his family rented and operated, trucking its produce into NYC markets. He excelled as a student and attended a local college Hofstra. He intended to transfer to Brooklyn PolyTech after two years to pursue engineering, but the prospect of a daily one hour train ride to Brooklyn led him to pursue his degree in mathematics at Hofstra (1951). He then served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He then began an actuarial career in the insurance business, with attainment of Fellowship of the Society of Actuaries (FSA 1958). He attended IBM's computer school in the early 1960s, and the next couple of years he developed his company's (Home Life) computer system that administered its group business for the next several decades. He enjoyed and was proud of his actuarial career, and achieved success and respect during his years in business.

He and his wife, the love of his life, were married (1951) for 67 years, with personalities that complimented each other. They had five children Joan Hinrichs (Boston), Patty, McMahan (Mike, Charlotte NC), Susan O'Neill (Terry, Philadelphia PA), Tom Hinrichs (Margie, Scarborough ME), Kathy Montgomery (Richard, Portugal). They have 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Pete and Joan took their family on annual camping trips, including three cross-country trips. They particularly liked trips to Moosehead Lake. Pete was a lifelong learner, always a book nearby, and participated in Learning in Retirement including leading classes such as Poetry, which made his family smile.

Pete lived in Maine since 2014, and he cherished being part of the Magnolia neighborhood in Scarborough. Pete was grateful for his last several years at The Enclave home and the warm family feeling among residents that conjured up his early years. Modesty, excellence and friendliness were his traits throughout his life.
