In Loving Memory of Captain Peter Kaulbach
August 22, 1947- October 26, 2025
Captain Peter Kaulbach set sail on his final voyage on October 26, 2025.
He is survived by his daughter, Whitney Kaulbach; his granddaughter, Kata Gilbertson; his sister, Katie Kaulbach; and his nieces, Courtney and Ashley Kaulbach, along with Ashley's son, Kaleb.
Peter was alive when he wrote this obituary, wanting his own words to share what mattered most to him. He wished people to know that his greatest joy in life was knowing and loving everyone he met.
After the loss of his beloved daughter, Taylor, in 2015, Peter moved to St. Augustine to begin a new chapter. He and his wife, Elizabeth, became active members of Trinity Episcopal Church, and he found great purpose volunteering with the Ramp Brothers-an experience he considered a daily blessing. When Elizabeth passed away in 2022, Peter chose to remain in St. Augustine, a place that had truly become home. Continuing his lifelong passion for boating brought him constant happiness, and he felt deeply grateful for the love, support, and fellowship of the local AA community.
In his later years, Peter faced cancer and other health challenges, yet he continued to live fully. Traveling the world and building a loving, joyful relationship with Claire Southerland brought him renewed meaning. Attending theater, opera, and concerts in Old Town with Claire reminded him that it is never too late to find love or joy-if you keep an open heart. His daughter, Whitney, remained lovingly by his side through every moment, surrounding her father with unwavering care, compassion, and devotion.
Peter requested no flowers or donations. Instead, he asked that others honor his memory by learning a craft by hand, volunteering, or showing kindness even to those with differing values. He hoped that future generations would continue to cherish education, the power of reading, and the sacred right of every person to vote freely.
Services will be held at the Memorial Gardens of Trinity Parish Episcopal Church on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at 10:30 a.m.
"The world," Peter wrote, "needs more community, more peace, and more kindness."

Earlier today

Peter will be missed. We have spoken every week since my step sister, Beth, died. In high school, Peter was the very intelligent, adventurous wild guy. Always controversial and funny to the bitter end. Love you, Pete
