Horan & McConaty Funeral Service & Cremation - Southwest Denver/LakewoodPeter Joseph Levine, age 87, of Lakewood Colorado passed away at home June 27, 2025. Pete was born April 6, 1938, in Spring Valley, New York, to Emanual Levine and Mary (Swartz) Levine. He lived in various locations associated with his coaching career, finally settling in Lakewood, Colorado where he lived for over 50 years. He married the love of his life, a teacher and librarian, Geraldine, in 1966.
Pete attended Oklahoma State University and was, above everything else, a football coach who distinguished himself in settings that spanned high school, college, professional and international, including St. Joe’s High School, Lakewood High School, Adams City High School, Mullen High School, The University of Colorado, The Orlando Thunder, and The Reine Fire.
Pete loved his players above all and used football as a metaphor for teaching them about life. He used to say that life was too complicated, and he chose football because it made it simple, “you turn on the scoreboard every week and find out exactly where you stand.” Those who had the privilege of knowing Pete were not fooled by his tough exterior; he was defined by his humanity and heart of gold.
Dr. Tommy Watson, one of Pete’s players from Mullen High School and The University of Minnesota, spoke to all his players when he wrote:
It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved football coach, Pete Levine. Over the course of more than fifty years, Coach Levine dedicated his life to shaping the lives of countless young people—both on and off the field. His unwavering passion, guidance, and kindness left an enduring legacy that has touched generations. Many of us are who we are today because of his lessons, his belief in us, and the love he showed for his players. His impact extends far beyond the game, influencing us to be better people and inspiring our children to carry forward his spirit.
Please join us for a celebration of Coach Pete’s life, Monday, November 3rd, 5:30 pm, at The Mirage Sports Bar, 8340 W. Coal Mine Ave., Littleton, CO 80123.
