Peter Paul “Paul” Lunter was born on June 24, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, and was a beloved resident of Palos Heights since 1968. He passed away peacefully at the age of 94, surrounded by family.
Paul was the devoted son of the late Elizabeth and Nicholas Lunter and was preceded in death by his sister Helen and his best friend and brother John, as well as brothers Matthew and Alexander who died as infants in Slovakia. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Eileen, and their children: Mary Beth (Bob) Lunter-Till, Cathy (Bill) Corrigan, Paul (Marilo) Lunter, and Nancy Yatzkan. He was a proud grandfather to Michael, Matthew (Niki), and Alex (Lorissa) Kwain; Charlie and Claire Corrigan; Emma and Andrew Yatzkan; Karinna (Aaron) Andersen; and Jon-Paul Lunter and his great-grandchildren: Zoe, Ava, and Viktoriya Kwain.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to his dedicated caregivers, especially his friend Virginia who lovingly cared for him and kept him smiling, singing and whistling, as well as the compassionate staff at Three Oaks Hospice, particularly Leslie and Tanesha, for their exceptional care and kindness.
A proud veteran, Paul served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War as a cryptologist, spending two of those years stationed in Japan, an experience he always spoke of with great fondness. After his military service, he worked as a skilled pipe fitter, lending his expertise to many Cook County buildings. Known for his professionalism, deep knowledge, and strong work ethic, Paul earned the respect of all who worked alongside him.
Paul’s faith was central to his life. He was a devoted and active member of St. Alexander’s Parish, serving as an usher for over 50 years and also as a Eucharistic Minister. Alongside Eileen and close friends, he participated in many parish programs and musicals; always bringing joy, laughter, and energy to every gathering.
Family was Paul’s greatest love and source of pride. He had an infectious sense of humor, a natural gift for storytelling, and a boundless curiosity about others. His upbeat attitude and genuine interest in everyone he met made him a friend to all.
Paul and Eileen shared countless adventures; traveling together, playing bridge (his favorite partner was always Eileen), golfing with his brother John (with whom he celebrated a hole-in-one at Westgate Golf Course), and camping with family and the Palos Heights Road Runners, where he earned the affectionate title of “Mr. Clean.” Known for his hard work and immaculate lawn, Paul took great pride in every task he undertook.
Paul’s laughter, kindness, and positivity brightened every room he entered. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and neighbors, and remembered always for his humor, warmth, and unwavering love of life.
