John Lunter

John Lunter, age 90, of Rittman, passed away on Monday, May 27, 2024, at the Apostolic Christian Home following a period of declining health.
John was born on June 29, 1933 in Rittman to the late Josef and Mare (Prtro) Lunter. He graduated from Rittman High School with the class of 1952. In 1953, he joined the U.S. Army and was Honorably Discharged in 1955. During his service, he married his high school sweetheart Reah Mae Schaad on June 6, 1954.
Throughout his career, John worked for VK Steiner Construction, Shook Lumber and eventually became Co-owner of Builder's & Kitchens for 18 years before retiring in 1997.
He was an active member of Rittman United Methodist Church where he was involved in the planning and amp; building committee for the present church and parsonage. He chaired and served as a church trustee for many years. John was an original founder of the Rittman Pee Wee Football program. During his tenure he served as a coach, Director, Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner of the league. He was a member in the Rittman Booster Club. He operated the clock at the football games for over 30 years. As a Chamber of Commerce member, he was involved with multiple projects involving the Apple and Sleepwalker festivals along with other civic projects. In his late years, he was part of planning and building committees for the Rittman Recreation Center and then continued on as a board member for many years.
John's commitment to his community was evident through his recognition as Citizen of the Year for the years of 1974 and again in 1999.
John cherished time spent with his family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness.
John is survived by his two sons, Jeff Lunter and Todd (Marlene) Lunter both of Rittman; daughter, Keely (Dave) Dreher of Rittman; three grandchildren, Kyle (Carol) Lunter of Cleveland Heights, Josef (fiancé Madison) Dreher of Milwaukee, WI and John Dreher of Almont, CO; and his ice cream buddy Izzy.
He was preceded in death by is father, Josef Lunter; mother, Mare Lunter; and beloved wife, Reah Lunter who passed away on September 3, 2018.
Services will be held Thursday, June 6, 2024 at 12:30 p.m. at Auble-Gillman Funeral Home, 360 W. Sunset Dr., Rittman. Burial will follow at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at 1:45 p.m.
Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 6 at the funeral home.
