Peter Scott, of Brighton, passed away peacefully on September 19th, 2023. He was 78 years old.
Son of the late Bernard and Barbara Scott, Peter is survived by his children, Katharine Scott, Carol (Colin) Booth and David (Kristopher Williams) Scott; granddaughters, Sarah and Emily Booth; brothers, Colin (Diane) and Ed (Liz) Scott; beloved life partner, Charlene; also many extended family and dear friends.
Peter is also preceded in death by his brother, Olly Scott.
As a mathematician, Peter Scott was well-known for his contributions to low-dimensional topology and geometry. In particular, he proved many very important results on the topology of 3-dimensional manifolds. He also pioneered the application of geometric methods to combinatorial group theory. In addition to the strength of his research, Peter was known as a great expositor. His mathematical writing has inspired many mathematicians and will continue to do so.
After completing his undergraduate studies at Balliol College, Oxford, Peter was among the first students to earn a PhD from Warwick University in 1969. He spent twenty years as a professor at the University of Liverpool and then thirty at the University of Michigan until finally retiring in 2018. (https://lsa.umich.edu/math/people/memorials.html)
Peter was a kind and generous father, who always took time for his children, made them feel safe and accepted, and set them up for success. He inspired scientific and mathematical curiosity about the world, loved to play, and encouraged open and unconditional love. He set a great example by accepting and appreciating others for who they are with calmness and patience, without trying to change them.
A Memorial will be held at Community Unitarian Universalists (CUUB), 3333 S. Old US 23, Brighton, 48114, on November 11th, 2023, at 1pm.
