Peter W. Van Der Velde Jr.

Van Der Velde, Peter W. Jr. age 77 of Pompton Plains, On Tuesday August 27, 2024.
Pete served proudly with the U.S. Army, stationed in the Central Highlands of Vietnam.
Pete was born and spent his early childhood in the Bunker Hill Section of Paterson. Later, moving to Ramsey and then North Haledon.
His law enforcement work started with the Passaic County Sheriff's Office and transitioned to the Hawthorne Police department where a 36 year long career took him from patrol man and culminated with the rank of Captain. He served as a Traffic Officer, Emergency Management Coordinator and was active on a statewide level throughout his career. Including a 40 year position with Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, Pete was an esteemed professional.
After retiring from the force, he continued his work in the borough as a resource officer at Hawthorne High School and later as the Code Enforcement Officer. He took pride in being a member of the community as a delegate for Hawthorne PBA #200 and the Ramsey and North Haledon Volunteer Fire Departments.
Peter W. Van Der Velde, Jr. beloved husband of Lorraine Van Der Velde. Loving father of Nicole Panel and her husband Pierre Alexis, and Jacqui Kerik, her husband Joseph and their children Maverick, Benjamin, and Alyssa. Survived by his brother Paul and wife Christine, sisters; Mary Ann and husband Robert DeBlock and Ruth Ann and husband Arthur Weiss along with many cherished nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 1:30pm at Our Lady of Mount Carmel R.C. Church, Ridgewood. Cremation will be private. Pete's ashes will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery in the Spring of 2025.
Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home on Thursday, from 3:00pm to 7:00pm.
