Peyton Charles Robert, Jr., known as “Charlie,” died on December 12, 2025 of congestive heart failure. He was born into a prominent family of Louisiana educators on January 3, 1932. He was preceded in death by his parents Pat and Margaret Fort Robert; and by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary Ellen Spiller Robert. He is survived by his three children Dana Robert Daneel of Somerville, Massachusetts; Kevin Robert (Florestella) of Houston; and Greg Robert of League City, Texas., six grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. He is also survived by his dear friend and bridge partner Sally Gerhold of Baton Rouge.
A 1950 graduate of Baton Rouge High School, Charlie captained the basketball team that won the Louisiana state championship. With most of his teammates, he proceeded to Louisiana State University, where in 1953 they became the first LSU basketball team to reach the NCAA Final Four. In 1953-4, Charlie served as Cadet Colonel of the ROTC at LSU. He served two years in the U.S. artillery in Hanau, Germany, and eventually retired from US Army Reserves with the rank of Captain. He taught in the East Baton Rouge Parish school system, both before and after working for thirty years at the Dow Chemical Company, as plant manager. Charlie was Emerald Life Master in the ACBL and an active member of the Baton Rouge Bridge Club. He was a member of the Ingleside United Methodist Church. Interment is at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Special thanks go to hospice nurse Blake, and to Allison Kelley and Allen Kinney, whose care helped him stay in his home to the end.
