Phil G. Zimmerman

Phil G. Zimmerman, 86, of Rockford, passed away on Saturday, September 20, 2025. Born September 25, 1938, in Holgate, OH, the son of Ralph and Martha (Rettig) Zimmerman. Phil graduated from Holgate High School, Class of 1956, received his Bachelor's degree from Ohio University in 1960 and his Doctorate degree from Harvard Medical School in 1964. He completed his residency and Pulmonary training at University Hospitals Case Western Reserve. Phil is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving two years as a Captain in Osan, Korea and Luke Air Force Base, Arizona. Phil married Susan F. Boyer on November 18, 1967 in Quincy, IL. Together they spent 57 wonderful years of a beautiful marriage. They loved traveling, learning and amazing adventures. Phil was a seeker of truth in all areas. He was a member of Aesculapian Club, Harvard, Boston, MA, 38th Parallel Medical Society of Korea, University Club of Rockford, Pot Luck Group, Fun of the Month Group for many years and Court Street United Methodist Church. Phil was a Pulmonologist and member of The Rockford Clinic and Clinical Associate Professor at University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford.

Survived by his wife, Susan; children, Katherine Zimmerman, John (Laura) Zimmerman, Lewis (Claire) Zimmerman and Robert Zimmerman; and grandchildren, Phoenix, Raiden, Orion, and Adelaide. Preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Ralph Zimmerman, Jr.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2025 at Court Street United Methodist Church, 215 N. Court St., Rockford with Reverend Calvin Culpepper officiating. Private burial in Scandinavian Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Wesley Willows at 4142 Johns Farm Rd., Rockford, IL 61101 and note 'RISE Scholarship Fund for Employees' or 'CNA Training Program Scholarship' in the memo line to direct your gift.
