Philip Mark Balvocius, known to all as Phil, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2025, after a brief illness. He was 73.
Born in San Diego, California, on November 21, 1951, to Joseph and Madelyn Balvocius, Phil lived a life full of adventure, service, laughter, and love.
A proud U.S. Navy veteran, Phil served his country with distinction for 27 years as part of the elite Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team. He retired as a Lieutenant Commander and a master diver, known for his bravery, discipline, and sense of duty. He spent most of his military career in Virginia Beach, VA, and never turned down a challenge-whether it was underwater or sky-high. A true thrill seeker in his younger years, Phil loved skiing with his high school ski club, skydiving, windsurfing, and many beach days.
After retiring from the Navy, Phil settled in Chapel Hill, NC, where he embraced a quieter life, always guided by routine and a deep love for his family. He was quick with a warm smile and a clever joke, and he never missed an opportunity to connect with others- whether chatting with neighbors on dog walks or calling his sister just to say hello.
Phil is survived by his beloved wife, Ellen Balvocius of Chapel Hill, NC; his daughter Sandy Estacio and son-in-law Glenn Estacio of Chapel Hill, NC; his grandchildren Henley and Cooper; his sons Philip Mark Balvocius, Jr. and Chris Balvocius, both of Hilton Head, SC; and his grandson Logan. He also leaves behind his sister, Carol Dimit of California, his nephew Ryan Dimit and Ryan's family, and his two loyal dogs, Trixie and Licorice, who miss him dearly.
Phil will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his unwavering sense of duty, his love of family, and the countless lives he touched with his kindness and humor. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Philip, please visit our Tree Store.
