Obituary published on Legacy.com by Glenville Funeral Home - Glenville on Dec. 23, 2024.
Philip Edward Benner III, 59, departed from our world on December 19, 2024, in Albany, New York, surrounded by his adoring family and friends after an illness. He was born in Schenectady, New York, on August 28, 1965, to his parents, Philip Edward Benner Jr. (deceased) and Helen W. (Stables) Benner.
A 1983 graduate of Scotia-Glenville High School, Philip was an enthusiastic Little League player and a skilled bowler, achieving numerous awards and perfect 300 scores throughout his life. He was a regular at Scotia Lanes. His childhood interests laid a foundation for the remarkable person he would become-a man of spirit, laughter, and love.
Philip proudly served his country as a sailor in the United States Navy for 15 years, a period during which he traveled extensively and experienced the exotic landscapes of Spain, the Middle East, Italy, and his favorite place, Bermuda. His naval service was a testament to his passion for adventure and patriotism.
After his honorable discharge, Philip's career path led him to the First Reformed Church in Schenectady, where he served as the Church Sexton, and to FilterFresh, where he worked as a driver.
It was during this chapter of his life that he met his future wife, the former Kimberly Ann Pitcher. Their marriage on September 10, 2005, was a celebration of their love that set the tone for the fun life they shared together. They reveled in the worlds of Science Fiction and Harry Potter, humorously naming their cherished fur-babies after characters from the series. Their life together was filled with humor and shared nerdy delights; traveling was a shared passion of the couple; places included the beautiful beaches of Hawaii, the warm company of friends in South Carolina, and the thrilling escapades in Florida, where visiting an amusement park was always on the itinerary.
Philip's professional journey continued at the V.A. Hospital in Albany, where he dedicated 12 years as a nutritionist specialist and kitchen supervisor.
An avid golfer, Philip also took great pleasure in supporting his favorite sports teams, the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Yankees. His passion for sports was matched only by his love for his animals and his family. He was a devoted son, who cared for his parents in their elder years. Those who knew Philip will forever remember his patient demeanor, his passionate heart, and his ability to bring laughter to any situation.
Philip is survived by his devoted wife, Kim A. Benner; siblings, Jay (Darlene) Benner and Kathleen "Kathy" Harrigan; his mother, Helen W. (Stables) Benner; and his treasured nieces, nephews, and fur babies. His presence will be profoundly missed, as will the joy and humor he so freely shared with all.
Calling hours will be held at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Rd. on Saturday, December 28th from 9 AM to 11 AM. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow at Memory Gardens in Colonie, NY.
