Philip William Siragusa, Jr. was born September 28, 1956, in Monroe, LA. As an infant, his family relocated to New Orleans, where they resided in Jefferson. Philip "Flip" Siragusa graduated from Rummel High School in 1974 and attended Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, LA. Flip began his career with the state as a warden, later manager of the Pas a Loutre Wildlife Management Area. He left state employment to serve as area supervisor of the nearby Delta Wildlife Refuge, before accepting a position as a Special Agent with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. In his over thirty years of service, he performed with distinction, specializing in migratory species, pioneering new techniques in electronic videography, innovating methods of conservation law enforcement, teaching marksmanship and serving as an instructor for the National Conservation Training Center, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and the Special Agent In Charge Training Program. In addition to his professional experience, Flip's interests were extensive. His curiosity was fostered by his parents and he became a taxidermist at the age of thirteen, later apprenticing with Joe Coombs. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, photography, model ship and plane construction, shrimping and trapping. In later years, his skills as a craftsman and woodworker were expressed in the creation of accordions, violins and cigar box guitars prized by regional musicians and private collectors. He created heirloom pieces of cypress furniture for family and friends and, as always, mentored those expressing an interest in learning the craft. Following retirement, he was driven by his interest in fresh and saltwater fishing to make rods and became an accomplished fly tier/creator, (Zatarain Shrimp and Pont Breaux Crawfish among them), lure maker and teacher of the art. He was active with the Kitsatchie Fly Tyers and Fly Fishers International. Flip continued his involvement in various organizations devoted to coastal land conservation, always particularly interested in the preservation of wildlife habitat.
Flip was preceded in death by his parents, Philip W. Siragusa and Lucile Fernandez Siragusa of Jefferson, LA. He is survived by his loving wife of twenty-one years, Janese Russo Siragusa of Lafayette, LA. His step-children, Carmen E. Harrington (grandson, Maximus Ezra) of Normal, IL, Claire E. Rivette of Midlothian, VA, Garret Russo of Lafayette, LA and Morgan Broussard, of Lafayette, LA. He leaves behind one brother, Dr. Gregory R. Siragusa (Johannah Peck) of Waukesha, WI, two nephews, Gregory P. and William, an extended family and multitude of friends.
