Philip Lynch Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Perry Funeral Home, Inc. on Oct. 9, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

Philip Sherwood Lynch passed away peacefully on October 8, 2025 at the age of 91. He is predeceased by his wife Ellin, to whom he was devoted from their marriage in 1958 until her passing in January 2022. Together they had five children Philip (Lisa), David (Sharon), Matthew (Dorothy), Michael, and Margaret (William) Long. He also leaves behind his four grandchildren Kimberly (Douglas), James, Finn, and Dylan. Philip was blessed with a great-granddaughter, Eleanore in 2024. He leaves behind his sister-in-law Anne Lynch and nephews, Joseph and Thomas. Philip is also predeceased by his parents Edward and Mary (nee Carolan), and his brothers Thomas, Edward and Joseph.
Philip was born in Rockaway Beach on May 31, 1934. His parents Edward and Mary raised their boys with a strong Catholic faith that commenced at Saint Mary Star of the Sea in Far Rockaway and continued throughout his life at St. Joachim in Cedarhurst. Philip was a proud graduate of Brooklyn Preparatory High School class of '52. He continued his education at Fordham University, Rose Hill where he graduated in the Class of '56.
Philip very proudly committed and served our nation in the United States Naval Reserve where he studied communications and achieved rank as Lieutenant Junior Grade. Philip maintained his proud connection with the military through his involvement with the VFW. It brought him great honor to march alongside his fellow service men and women each year in the Inwood Memorial Day Parade.
Throughout his life, Philip was dedicated to his family, community, and church. Having grown up and spent most of his adult life living in Cedarhurst and as a parishioner of St. Joachim, Cedarhurst was Philip's home. He spent countless hours both playing and coaching ball games in Cedarhurst Park and in the St. Joachim's gymnasium. He was a key leader for the St. Joachim's Drum and Bugle Corp for many years. He enjoyed many summers at the beach in Rockaway, and later with his family at Sun and Surf Beach Club.
Philip cherished time with his family, children, grandchildren, and friends. The blessing of meeting his new great-granddaughter Ellie brought him enormous joy. Philip's loved ones visited with him often and provided loving care for him in his last years, especially after Ellin's passing.
Philip had a lively personality, a warm and endearing smile, twinkling Irish eyes, and a hearty laugh. He instilled endearing qualities in those he had influence upon. Love your family and friends. Honor thy country and faith. Work hard. Enjoy life. Welcome everyone. Do God's work.
Philip will be forever remembered and loved dearly.
In lieu of flowers, Philip requests donations be made in his memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. https://www.stjude.org/
