Philip H. Meyer, 68, of Storm Lake, Iowa ended his battle with cancer on September 25th, 2023 in his home.
A Celebration of Life will take place Friday, September 29, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 12-2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Buena Vista Regional Oncology Department. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Phil was born February 14th, 1955 to Harold & Margaret (Lambert) Meyer of Truesdale, Iowa. He maintained that since he was born on Valentines Day, he was Mother's only sweetheart. He would also jokingly use his birthday for years to come as an excuse that he did not have to participate in Valentine's Day celebrations as it was his Birthday. He attended grade school in Truesdale, Iowa and graduated high school from Albert City in 1973.
In March of 1980 Phil was blessed with his only daughter Cassi. On August 24th of 2001 he was united in marriage to Tammy Cain of Storm Lake, Iowa and Phil would welcome a step son, Andy Smith.
In his early adulthood Phil filled his days with all kinds of activities including dancing, bowling, softball and raising a little hell. As the years got on his interests would turn to activities that were a little more subdued like a dart league, pool, yard work and of course once fall arrived he would watch the Bears on tv even when they were losing. He also became quite passionate about golfing throughout the years - he would try to get out there every chance he got and was a member of the Storm Lake Golf Course.
Phil also enjoyed meeting up with his friends a couple times a week to catch up and enjoy some down time. He was well liked by many and considered very generous and caring especially when friends were having tough times.
Phil often traveled to Washington state to visit his daughter and her family throughout the years and forged many friendships throughout his continued visits - he continued to maintain contact with a lot of them even when he was not visiting his daughter. He will be dearly missed by many.
Phil worked for 39 years and retired from the Iowa Department of Transportation - he was based out of the City of Storm Lake DOT shed. Throughout his years at the DOT he plowed thousands of miles of snow during countless blizzards, mowed countless ditches during long hot summers and braved the high-lift to maintain light poles high up in the sky. He loved his overtime and took all he could get. This provided a stable job with good benefits and a solid retirement plan of which both he could be content with and build his life. Phil was also a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake.
Phil is survived by his wife Tammy Meyer of Storm Lake, Iowa; daughter Cassi Siebol and husband Travis of Nooksack, Washington; step son Andy Smith of Portland, Oregon as well as seven siblings: Paul Meyer of Storm Lake, Iowa; Mary Leadley & husband Jim of Indianola, Iowa; Teresa Andrews of Sioux City, Iowa; Tim Meyer & wife Nancy of Omaha, Nebraska; Barry Meyer of Truesdale, Iowa; Sara Johnson & husband Chuck of Willamana, Oregon & Tony Meyer & wife Rita of DeSoto, Iowa. He also is survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Harold & Margaret Meyer, his infant brother Andrew Meyer and son in law Mark Huisman.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Oncology Staff for their continued care throughout his battle as well as the Sioux City Hospice team who was nothing short of a godsend.
