Philip "Phil" Murray, age 77 of St. Johns, died peacefully at home in the care of his family on February 18, 2025, after a valiant battle with cancer.
Phil was born in Lima, Ohio, on January 31, 1948. He attended Everett High School in Lansing, and shortly thereafter, he met the love of his life, Jacqulyn Sue Ferguson, on a blind date. Phil and Jackie were married on May 4, 1968, and made their home in Lansing. Phil's "get it done" attitude and strong work ethic were evident early in his life. He was a talented tile setter, with many significant projects under his belt, including work at the State Capitol building in Lansing, the Lansing Center, schools, malls, and MSU. He took pride in his craft, treating each project as an art form, and generously completed numerous projects for family and friends.
Phil was busy all his life, always finding new ways to keep active and engaged. His loyalty to those he loved was unmatched, and he was truly the best husband, father, uncle, brother, and friend anyone could ask for. He adored his cats-Fluffy, Bill, and TJ-who brought him much joy.
Phil and Jackie eventually settled in St. Johns, where they raised their children in the peaceful, rural setting of the country. Their son, Bobby, was lost far too soon at age 14, and the family endured the heartache of his passing. Despite this unimaginable grief, Phil's dedication to his family never wavered. His unwavering devotion, "no fuss" approach to life, and strong work ethic helped to provide a stable, loving home for his family.
Phil is survived by his loving wife of nearly 57 years, Jackie Murray; daughter, Colleen Murray; sister, Myrna Murray; nieces, Amy (Bob) Grignon and Kim Bielecki; great nieces, Samantha Burton and Lou Ann Bielecki; great nephew, Brandon Grignon; two best friends, Kit Lee and Chris Lapinski; as well as many extended family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Robert "Bobby" Edward Murray, his parents, Ralph and Violet Murray; sister-in-law, Jane (Dave) Bielecki and in-laws, Reva and Clarence Ferguson.
Memorial service details are pending.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to: Brain Injury Association of Michigan, Lansing Chapter or to Capitol Area Humane Society.
