Phillip E. Chevalier, 67, of New Bedford passed away Tuesday May 20, 2025 at home after a long illness.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Gerald P. and Blanche M. (Lavoie) Chevalier, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
Phil was formerly employed as a van driver for Adult Day Care in Fairhaven.
When Phil was younger he loved playing baseball and basketball for St. Anthony's. As he got older he transitioned to softball and was in an all Chevalier outfield that included his brothers and his dad. He then became an amazing coach in S.E.Y.A.A. where he coached his sons Greg and Gerry on multiple teams including all-star teams. He could remember almost every play from every game like it was played yesterday. To say Phil was a sports fan would be an understatement. He loved the Yankees, Celtics, Patriots, and Bruins. He was always watching a game, he once famously missed seeing the glaciers of Alaska on a cruise because he was watching a Twins vs Athletics game. He really loved baseball but even more than that, he loved his grandchildren. He loved going to Ella's games and watching TV with Allie. He would answer every one of Austin's questions, let Sawyer climb all over him, and chase Landon all over the house. He never believed in technology so his calls always came from a landline. He would never leave a message he would just call back until you picked up, no matter how many times it took. He would pester his personal hair stylist Steph until she came over to trim his already bald head. He would just laugh it off when Renee would say she could hear him cursing at the TV through the walls during a big game. He would never miss a call on a holiday making sure he got in touch with his daughter-in-law Nicole to make her feel appreciated on Mother's Day. He was thoughtful in his own way. He loved in his own way. He was not a modern man, he knew how to use the remote and that's about it.
He is survived by his loving companion of 47 years, Carol LaBrode; his sons, Gregory Chevalier and his wife Nicole, and Gerald Chevalier; his grandchildren, Ella, Allie, Austin, Sawyer, and Landon; his siblings, Jackie Correia and her husband Andy, Linette Michaud and her husband Al, Michelle Amaral and her husband Steve, Jeannine Chevalier, Richard Chevalier and his wife Joanne, and Maurice Chevalier and his wife Rosie; his in-laws, Alan Labrode and his wife Ann, Ronald LaBrode, and Patricia Zussy and her husband Robert; his very special niece, Renee Deloid; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Denise Gelinas; his uncle/stepfather, Norman Chevalier; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lillian and John LaBrode; and his brothers-in-law, John LaBrode, Jr. and Steven LaBrode.
A family celebration of life will be held at a later date.
