Phillip Michael O'Mara Sr., age 71, of Ionia, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2025, after a brave battle with ALS. Born on April 18, 1954, in Hastings, Michigan, Phil was the beloved son of Thomas Stephen and Norma Louise (Shoemaker) O'Mara.
Phil lived a life defined by love, generosity, and selflessness. He was the kind of man who was always there to help-whether you were family, a friend, or a stranger in need. He was the best husband, the most loving father, and a true role model. His strength, kindness, and devotion left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
A proud graduate of Ionia High School, Class of 1972, Phil went on to marry his high school sweetheart, Diane M. Magee, on June 16, 1973. Their love story spanned more than 50 years, and together they raised three sons who were the pride of his life. He was a devoted member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church.
Phil was a hard-working entrepreneur who owned and operated O'Mara Plumbing and Heating and the "Do it" Center in Ionia for many years, alongside his wife Diane. With a natural business mind and an unstoppable work ethic, he pursued many ventures over the years. But no matter how busy life became, his heart was always with his family.
He found joy in the outdoors-hunting, fishing, and golfing-but his favorite place was always by Diane's side, especially on their many adventures traveling together.
Phil's legacy lives on through his loving wife Diane; his sons, Phillip (Jessica) O'Mara of Manning, SC; Bradley O'Mara of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and Scott (Amber) O'Mara of Byron Center, MI; and his cherished grandchildren: Taylor, Jayden, Finn, Payne, Macy, Raygen, Charlotte, Theodore, and Henry.
He is also survived by his siblings: Onette McKenna, Colleen (Larry) Goodman, David (Gwen) O'Mara, Patrick (Deb) O'Mara, Robert (Patricia) O'Mara, Stephen (Cathy) O'Mara, and Thomas (Darcy) O'Mara, along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family who loved him deeply.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Susan Csonka.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 2nd at 11:00 a.m. at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ionia. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia, with a scripture service beginning at 6:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Phil's memory to the ALS Association https://www.als.org/. Online condolences may be shared at

Phil gave his family a lifetime of love, strength, and laughter. Though he is no longer with us, the example he set and the love he gave will live on forever.

As a youth, I was fortunate to meet the O'Mara Clan when my sister Debbie married Pat, and Phil was one of those rare individuals offering sage advice...with warmth and humor. My life is better for knowning him and his family.
