Phillip Rye Obituary

To everything, there is a season…Phillip Hibbitts Rye, MD, died peacefully on July 20, 2023, at his home. Dr. Rye was born in the middle of the Great Depression on February 25, 1937, in Texarkana, Arkansas. Moving to New Orleans in his early childhood, he lived on Congress St., Esplanade Ave., and Bourbon St. He is survived by his four sons, Sven, William (Christina), Erik (Sarah) and Phillip (Stephanie), and grandchildren, Isabella, Hudson, and Henry Rye. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Merrill Mey Rye; his sister, Phyllis Ann Rye; mother, Neva Perry Rye; and father, George Earl Rye. A beloved physician, Dr. Rye practiced medicine for over 50 years. He received his MD in 1965 from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. He completed his internship in 1966 from US Public Health Service in San Francisco and his OB-GYN residency in 1969 from Charity Hospital (LSU). He was a member of the Orleans Parish Medical Society, Louisiana State Medical Society, New Orleans Gynecological and Obstetrical Society, the New Orleans Society of Clinical Hypnosis, the Society of Reproductive Surgeons, and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was passionate about patient care and helping everyone he encountered. An avid reader, he was always gifting books to empower the people he loved. He began his private practice in 1969, delivering multiple generations of babies to the families of New Orleans, and his ground-breaking research and accomplishments on women's health and infertility have been published in numerous well-respected medical journals. Prior to joining the medical field, he served his country in the US Army (1955-1958), stationed in Germany. He was a crossword puzzle genius, enjoyed fishing with his sons, hosting dinner parties and rowdy poker games on Jefferson Ave., and could always make you laugh or groan with a "Dr. Rye joke" (Boudreaux jokes were his favorite). Above all, he was the most selfless friend and fully devoted to his family who will dearly miss him. The family will hold a celebration of Dr. Rye's life in the fall. Til Valhal…

Just reading that Dr. Rye has passed. When he first started his own practice, I sent him a plant for his new office with a note" to the doctor that proves Marcus Wellby´s do really exist!" Dr. Rye was one of a kind! Delivered both my boys, 1971 & `78. After I moved from NOLA, I called many years later, his nurse would say he´s really busy right now, can I take a message, I would say tell him I need to speak to Dr. Wellby! A few minutes later he would be on the phone. I am so sorry to hear about his passing. I´ll be praying for his family that Matthew 5:4 has proved true. God Bless! Prayerfully,

When my doctor of thirty-five years decided to practice in Baton Rouge only I asked who else in the office could I see. Julie recommended Dr. Rye. I wound up seeing him for five years until he retired. He was so full of wit and gave great advice. I loved his sense of humor - never met anyone like him, and so knowledgeable. I remember he use to tell me I needed to lose weight, so as I was leaving his office one time he said, "next year come back less of ya." I have never heard that one before, but I laughed and told so many people what he said. He was great, gentle and kind. I would have gone to him forever. I am just so saddened by this loss. Rest in peace Dr. Rye. Condolences to his family.

Even though I only knew Dr. Rye a short time, he became a great friend! Loved all his stories, recipes, nutrition and worldly advice. He was such a generous and caring man! He will be missed by all! So very sorry for your loss!

I first went to Dr. Rye when I had had four miscarriages after having my first child. My best friend had suggested Chinese herbs, and Dr. Rye was all for it. Subsequently his nurse, Julie, suggested to him that I should try going to LSU Medical School to see a doctor who was doing autoimmune therapy with women with these sorts of problems. I still don't know for sure which treatment worked, but I became pregnant soon afterward and carried the baby full term.

Dr. Rye also introduced me to Dabney Ewin, and I went on to become certified by ASCH, having Dr. Ewin as my case supervisor as part of the advanced training.

Dr. Rye was always sending me hilarious e-mails. I know somewhere, somehow, he's still telling his jokes. And his words of wisdom will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him.

I was a patient of Dr. Rye in the early 1990's and he helped me and my husband achieve our dream of starting a family in a big way. I'll never forget my first ultrasound when he came in the room, looked a the screen and told me, "Girl, when you get pregnant, you really get pregnant." For a moment I had no clue what he was talking about, but soon learned I was expecting triplets. He even came to my delivery, which I was not expecting. I worked in the NICU at Baptist so I would see him from time to time, and he always asked how they were doing. My sincere condolences to his family.

We are so sorry to hear about Dr. Rye´s passing. I started seeing Dr. Rye when I was 21 years old until the time that he retired. He was the most compassionate doctor that I have ever seen. He always had a joke and would give me books to read from his library of novels. Love and prayers to his family. May God welcome him into Heaven with open arms.

Wow, I just mentioned him to a client, yesterday. I was raving, again, about my most favorite doctor.
Never received the quality of care, after he retired.
My favorite stories, of Dr. Rye, are, walking in the park, and seeing him reading at the fly.
He also got answers from his son, about my dog, that I thought might be diabetic!
He was the most knowledgeable, about diet, nutrition, and holistic care. Was always willing to spend extra time, researching information to share.
RIP!

In loving memory of a wonderful person. We (I) will love you and miss you always. From a Patient and a Friends always. You deliver my first born and my last one, you truly knew how to treat and talk to your patient. I was very sad when you told me you was going to retired. They don´t make "Doctor" like you any more. What a Great Pleasure having your Father as a Doctor.
