Phillip Michael Scherer Sr., affectionately known as "Big Hands Mike" and lovingly called "Papoo" by his grandchildren, passed away on May 30, 2025, at the age of 62. He was a proud father, a grandfather, great grandfather, and a man whose life reflected both challenge and conviction, pride and complexity.
Born on May 3, 1963, in Kansas City, Missouri, Mike served in the United States Army, a chapter of his life that instilled in him a deep sense of duty and strength. His journey through life wasn't always easy, and in later years, his world became quieter. But for those who stayed close, there was always something worth holding onto-a moment of kindness, a story told with pride, or a glimpse of the love he carried in his own way.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Scherer III and Virginia Scherer. Mike is survived by his two sisters, Gin Paris and Cathy Britt, and by his three children: Phillip Scherer Jr. (wife Stacy), Jennifer Scherer, and Justin Scherer. He was "Papoo" to six grandchildren who brought light to his life: Kaylyn Chitwood, Jadalyn Scherer, Logan Scherer, Colton Scherer, Payton Halterman, Joyce Perry, and three great-grandchildren: Hartlee, Rhett, and Maci Chitwood.
He is also remembered by his extended family, including brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Mike was a man of strong opinions and a big presence. He talked often about how important family was to him, his love and pride were never far beneath the surface. He believed in standing up for yourself, and more importantly for those who couldn't stand up for themselves. Mike had a way of pulling people in, especially the ones life had left out. If you needed a place to land, he made room. Once you were his, you were his, and he protected you fiercely.
When it really mattered, he showed up. No matter the hour, no matter the cost. When the chips were down, you didn't just want Mike in your corner, you needed him there. If he loved you, you never had to wonder where he stood. It took patience to fully know him, and grace to understand him. He wasn't perfect. But he was ours.
Because Mike was a man of tradition and happiest at family events-sitting behind the bar in a basement, holding court with a beer in hand, "If you know, you know."
A memorial service for all friends and family will be held on Saturday, June 28th at the Lake Tapawingo Country Club, located at 244 Dockside Dr., Blue Springs, MO 64015. Doors open at 3:00 PM. A traditional memorial service will begin at 4:00 PM, immediately followed by a non-traditional "Mike's Final Hurrah"-a celebration of his life.
