Phillip D. Underhill, age 76, died on April 3, 2022, at his home with loved ones at his side.
Phil was born on December 21, 1945, in Huntington Hospital, Huntington Indiana, and was the loving son to Garth and Mary Ellen Underhill. He is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Karen Haugsrud Underhill, daughter Elizabeth Younce (David Younce), Arlington; son Jason Underhill (Nicole Woodard), of Sunderland, VT; sister, Jane Friermood of Huntington, IN, and brother John Underhill of Auburn, IN.
Phil is preceded in death by his parents, Garth and Mary Ellen Underhill, his sister, Rebecca Underhill Merryman, and niece Joni Smith Clay.
Phil was the loving grandfather to his special buddies, Logan David Younce and Nathan Phillip Younce. Parker Underhill and Brenner Underhill were also beloved grandchildren. Phil was blessed with numerous nieces and nephews. He was also blessed with many loving memories and moments with his in-law family, particularly, Anne Haugsrud McClaughry, her husband, John; John Haugsrud and partner Andrea; and Philip Webb.
Phil attended Huntington schools and graduated in 1964. He attended Ball State University on a full basketball scholarship, graduated in 1968, with a B.S. degree in education, and taught for four years at Blue Ridge High School in Mt. Summit, IN. In 1971, he became a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and was stationed in Chicago for most of his 23 years, serving most of those years in foreign counterintelligence. After retiring from the bureau, Phil served as a Federal consultant for the state of Vermont.
Phil was fortunate to have many highlights ibn his life – his marriage of fifty-four years to Karen, two healthy, productive children, four grandchildren, and the opportunity to retire in a state he loved. However, the highlight of the 1964 Indiana State Championship Basketball Final ranks near the top of his list. His small school of Huntington High defeated the larger schools in the basketball state and lost the final game by two points to LaFayette Jeff High School. Phil was a forward starter, and maintained the discipline Coach Straight expected throughout his life.
He was a member of the Federated Church of East Arlington, where he served on the Board of Trustees, and was respected by all who knew him. He was on the Arlington Food Shelf Board of Trustees, and was pro-active as much as he could be.
Phil was kind, honest, disciplined, protective, respected, and had a hard shell, with mush underneath. He was loved by all who knew him and could claim non as an enemy. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Services for Phil will be held Saturday April 9th at 1pm at the Federated Church of East Arlington, VT, followed by a reception Bailey Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Federated Church of East Arlington; Arlington Food Shelf; or Arlington Rescue Squad would be appreciated appreciated c/o Hanson Walbridge & Shea Arlington Chapel, PO Box 528 Arlington, VT 05250.

Many fun times at Ball State, but driving to Vermont through a blizzard as a chaperone forKaren and Phillip is etched in my memory forever!! She´ll have to share. Phil learned from
me: he should tell prospective references before he gives a name to the FBI!
