Phylis Baker Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Palmer Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Homes - Lansing Chapel on Jan. 10, 2026.
Phylis Carroll Baker (Rogers), age 89, of Dewitt went to be with the Lord on January 7, 2026. Phylis was born in Boomer, West Virginia on January 9, 1936, to parents Charles G. and Anne L. (Moore) Rogers.
Phylis grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia and graduated from Ansted High School in 1954. After graduation, she joined the United States Army where she spent time assigned to the Raven Rock Mountain Complex near Fort Ritchie, Maryland. During her service she also met the love of her life, fellow service member Bruce W. Baker. The two were inseparable and married on July 20, 1957.
After her departure from the Army, Phylis spent many years working as a secretary for the State of Michigan in the Department of Mental Health. During this time, she went back to school and earned her Associates of Interior Design in 1964 from Parson School of Design. After spending time raising her two sons, Phylis went back to work as a secretary for the Kresge Art Museum. She loved the art there and the many students that kept her young.
Phylis was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and was named Woman of the Year in her time by them. This honor is awarded to those who demonstrate exceptional service and leadership while with the sorority. Beta Sigma Phi was not the only organization to recognize her strong leadership. Phylis also served as the Chairmen of the Board of Trustees at the Historic First Baptist Church in Lansing, Michigan.
Phylis loved interior design. One of her favorite things to do was to decorate her home for the holidays. She also loved to arrange flowers, host friends and family, and sewing. Her family meant the world to her and for years made them Christmas decorations by hand.
Phylis leaves behind her husband Bruce W. Baker; her sons Brian (Heather) and Mark (Wendy) Baker; and her grandchildren Justin, Braden, Sean, Corinne, and Bryce.
Phylis joins her parents Charles and Anne (Moore) Rogers in Heaven along with her siblings Betty, Charles, Jack, David, and Larry.
Phylis loved her family so much and was loved so much in return. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
