Phyllis "Kay" Weaver Abernathy (AKA; Lambchop), 78, passed away on Sunday, February 1, 2026, in the loving arms of her wonderful and faithful husband, Joe. She was born in Gaston County, daughter of the late James C. Weaver and Letha Cagle Weaver. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her children, Jimmy Yow and Sharon Nettles; and her siblings, Libby Weaver, Jan Masters, Judy Ellis, and Joanne Mauney.
Mrs. Abernathy is survived by her husband of 47 years, Joseph Duncan Abernathy; her children, Jerry Dean Yow, Kimberly Diane Podwika, and Christopher Scott Abernathy; her grandchildren, Kyle, Christian, Taylor, Heyden, Taryn, Mandy, Derek, Corey, Harley, Jessica, Keith, Samantha, and Julie; a number of great-grandchildren; her siblings, Brenda Winkler (Herman) and Donald Weaver (Susie); and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Abernathy was a cancer survivor. She survived bone marrow transplant 35 years ago to fight AML, a type of blood cancer. She also suffered from a number of other medical complications, which ultimately led to a stroke.
Kay, "Lambchop", loved working with crafts and painting and spent much time with Kathy Croxton at the Needle & Brush Shop in downtown Belmont. Lambchop also worked several years in the EMC department at Gaston County Dye and Machine Company in Mount Holly, where she retired as Material Controls Supervisor.
A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Abernathy will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Lighthouse Full Gospel Church, Mount Holly. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn West Cemetery, Charlotte. The family will greet guests from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at the church.
