McKee Mortuary Inc.Phyllis Joyce (Baird) Brown, 88, of Silver Lake, IN, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2026. Born on March 13, 1937, in Linton, IN, to Ray C. and Fredia (Gillum) Baird. Phyllis grew up on her family's farm in Scotland, IN. Her early years were defined by her dedication to the land and her skill in showing Angus cattle, earning prestigious awards at both state and national levels.
A graduate of Bloomfield High School, Phyllis earned her Registered Nurse degree from the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Indianapolis. It was while working as a surgical nurse that she met the love of her life, Richard N. Brown. They married in 1959 and later moved to Mid-Michigan to raise their family on a farm of their own.
Phyllis was a woman of many talents, most notably as a gifted seamstress. She took special joy in creating custom bridal gowns, turning magazine inspirations into reality for brides in need. Phyllis believed that if a job was worth doing, it was worth doing right. Her precision and attention to detailed work was evident in everything she touched. She was a devoted mother to her three children while also caring for others, whether in the countless hours she volunteered assisting 4-H youth, tending the medical needs of her patients, or, most devotedly, the care she gave her husband during his final illness. In her later years, Phyllis returned to Indiana near her family. She continued engaging her creative energies sewing beautiful doll cloths and tending her flower gardens. She was often found basking in the sun near her blooms and chatting with neighbors.
She is survived by her children, Ronald Lee (Rebecca) Brown and Karena Ann (Stephen) Spatz; sister, Linda Stephenson; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; her son, Richard Ray Brown; her parents; and her sister, Judith Vurgason.
Phyllis shared a special bond with animals that began in her childhood growing up on the farm. Her bond with dogs was especially strong. After her husband passed away, she found a cherished companion in a Cocker Spaniel named Douglas. The two were a perfect fit of friendship and joy. Phyllis took solace in the companionship of another special dog, Cracker in her twilight years. He belonged to her Son and daughter-in-law. For Phyllis, he was a treasured family member who gave her comfort and reassurance.
She leaves behind a family who will forever remember her compassionate heart, her artisan talent, and her deep love of animals.
A graveside service will be held on March 27, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Scotland Cemetery, Wallace Street, Scotland, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Scotland Cemetery, 2149 East Big Bear Ridge Lane, Newberry, Indiana 47449.
