Princeton – Phyllis Marie Fasking, 86, of Princeton, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at OSF St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Peru, Illinois.
Phyllis was born on August 2, 1939, in Hindsboro, Illinois, to the late Cleo Glenn and Maxine (Hunt) Shonkwiler. She was a proud graduate of Eastern Illinois University, earning her degree in education in 1961, and devoted her professional life to teaching. Phyllis taught high school business and computer science, as well as junior high social studies, in the Saybrook, Herscher, Steger, and DePue school districts. She also served as a yearbook sponsor for many years and maintained lifelong relationships with colleagues. She retired from teaching in 1994, leaving a lasting impact on countless students.
A woman of deep faith and service, Phyllis was a longtime and devoted member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Princeton. She generously shared her talents and time, serving as a substitute pianist, deacon, elder, vice chairman, chairman of the board, trustee, and as a member of the Pastoral Support Team. Known for her independence and spirited nature, Phyllis was thoughtful and discerning in her leadership, offering guidance with honesty and care. She played an important role in helping the church make sound financial and stewardship decisions, always acting in its best interest.
Her commitment extended beyond her church. Phyllis served on the Illinois Retired Teachers Association Foundation Board, including work on the finance and building committees. Locally, she was deeply involved with the Bureau County Retired Teachers Association, holding offices as president, vice president, and secretary, and serving on numerous committees. She also volunteered for Mobile Meals for many years, quietly serving others with compassion and dedication.
Phyllis was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the United States and Europe, both before and after her retirement. She embraced new experiences and cultures with enthusiasm. A devoted sports fan, she faithfully followed the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears and was known to record games so she would never miss church.
She is survived by her brother, Dale (Peggy) Shonkwiler; niece, Cathy (Jeff) Tinnon; great-niece and great-nephews, Allison Tinnon, Elliott (Chelsee) Tinnon, and Maverick and Mabry Tinnon; and her brother-in-law, James "Rick" (Pamela) Fasking, whom she lovingly supported and cared for as family, along with his children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Cleo and Maxine Shonkwiler, and her sister-in-law, Peggy Shonkwiler, who passed away in 2023.
