Phyllis Fortunato, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and devout Catholic, passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2023 at the age of 83.
Phyllis was born in the heart of New York City and spent her formative years on the Upper East Side, a place that would forever hold a special significance in her heart. She was the daughter of Philip and Estrid Lynch.
On the glistening ice of Central Park, she met the love of her life, Robert Fortunato. The two embraced the magic of the moment, and their bond flourished over time. Their love story reached a pinnacle as they exchanged vows on their wedding day, a testament to the enduring romance that defined their union.
Phyllis and Robert initially carved out a life together in a modest apartment in the bustling metropolis of New York City. However, the couple made a significant decision to move to Pequannock Township, NJ, seeking a tranquil environment to raise their children. Phyllis took on the role of a dedicated homemaker, creating a warm and nurturing haven for her family.
As her sons grew older and embarked on their educational journeys, Phyllis decided to re-enter the workforce, bringing her meticulous and organized nature to an accounting role as a bookkeeper. Her commitment to her family extended beyond the walls of her home, and her unwavering support left an indelible mark on their lives.
A devout Catholic, Phyllis found solace and community in her faith. She was a cherished and longstanding parishioner of both Holy Spirit Church and St. Joseph's Church, where her spiritual devotion was a source of inspiration for many.
Phyllis's greatest joy in life was her family, and she was fiercely devoted to her husband, Robert. Despite the challenges posed by dementia in her final years, Phyllis found comfort and happiness in the daily visits from the love of her life. Her enduring love and commitment to family were a testament to the strength of her character and the depth of her compassion.
Phyllis Fortunato will be remembered not only for her enduring love story but also for the warmth, kindness, and dedication she brought to every aspect of her life. She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and family that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Phyllis is survived by her loving husband, Robert; her children, Stephen Fortunato and his wife Suzanne Owens, and Michael Fortunato and his wife Marta; and her grandchildren, Montgomery and Maelyn Fortunato.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 28, 2023 from 4- 7 pm at the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be held 10 am Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at Holy Spirit Church, Pequannock. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, West Milford.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Phyllis' memory to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America would be greatly appreciated.
