Stephen "Steve" Higgins, 84, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 20th, following complications from cancer. Born in Hanover, NH on April 10th, 1941, he lived in New Jersey from the 1950s and passed away in Pompton Plains, NJ 2025.
Steve lived a life filled with humor, generosity, and a love for the outdoors. After proudly serving in the Army, he went on to college and built a career as a truck driver-proving, as he loved to say, that you could make a living staring out the window, despite what a teacher once told him.
A lifelong gardener, Steve found joy among daffodils, colorful hydrangea, petunias, peonies, and roses. He took pride in cultivating his butterfly gardens. He loved splitting and stacking firewood, tending winter fires, and watching the changing seasons. An avid storyteller, he believed every tale deserved a little creative polish. His kindness reached many: giving rides to strangers, offering temporary housing to those in need, or simply lending a helping hand.
Steve's playful spirit surprised family and friends alike-whether always finding the best parking spot, or leaving an unassembled pool table in his daughter's apartment. As a grandfather he spent hours with his grandchildren exploring zoos and riding trains, making the most of the outings rain or shine. He never met a digger he didn't admire or a construction site he couldn't comment on. His vision transformed landscapes wherever he went.
Steve was preceded in death by his wife, Ingrid, (2000) and is survived by his sister Faith, his son, Christopher Higgins, daughter, Katherin Higgins, and two grandchildren, his nieces Ann Simpson, Karen Bolmer, and Russell and Kathy Comstock and grandnieces Mikala, Lanier and grandnephew Theo Bolmer.
A virtual memorial to celebrate his life will be held on July 20th, 2025 please contact [email protected] for more information.
Additionally we will be gathering to honor Stephen on the same day, Sunday July 20th 11 am in Tafton, PA please contact [email protected] for details.
