Phyllis was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend. She passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on August 30, 2025, at Mesilla Valley Hospice, in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Phyllis was born to Jack and Ruby Davenport on May 18, 1937, in Springer, New Mexico. She grew up in Farley New Mexico and that was where she met and married Darwin T. McCarty in 1955.
Shortly after their marriage, Phyllis and Darwin moved to Farmington, New Mexico to begin their family where their three daughters; Jacque, Jan and Darla were born in rapid succession. A few years later, the family moved to Fort Sumner, New Mexico, and then on to Alamogordo, New Mexico. Phyllis often said that she had the only job she ever wanted – to be a mom. She was an accomplished seamstress and sewed most of the clothes for her girls, often making matching dresses for special occasions. She also worked as a babysitter and as an assistant at a photography studio, but through it all, she remained a homemaker at heart.
While in Alamogordo, her beloved husband fell ill with Alsheimer's Disease. Phyllis was devoted to his care over many years and after he required in-house care, she often traveled to Las Cruces to spend as much time as possible caring for Darwin until his passing in 2006. Her love and devotion to her husband was selfless and amazing and was an inspiration to us all.
In her later years, Phyllis began showing signs of memory loss and as a result, she moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico where she took up residence at Solstice Senior Living Facility and then at Haciendas at Grace Village. Here she continued to be truly loved and well cared for until her passing. Even as memories of loved ones slipped away, Phyllis remained kind and loving to everyone she encountered which made her one of the favorites of the caretakers.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Ruby Davenport and her husband Darwin McCarty. She is survived by two brothers, Ron Davenport (of Floydada, Texas, and Don Davenport (of Lemitar, New Mexico). She is also survived by her three children, Jacque McCormick (of Florence, Colorado), Teri Janelle (Jan) Plante and her husband Barry (of Shoreacres, Texas), and Darla Matthew and her husband Eric (of Las Cruces, New Mexico). Finally, Phyllis is survived by 9 grandchildren whom she loved very much and 14 wonderful great grandchildren!
The life and love of Phyllis McCarty will be honored at a service to be held at 1:00 pm MST on October 23, 2025, at the La Paz–Graham's Funeral Home located at 555 W. Amador Ave. Las Cruces, New Mexico.
