Phyllis Anne Murray (née Steeves), age 88, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026, in
Forest Grove, Oregon. Born on December 19, 1938, in
Sturgis, South Dakota, Phyllis lived a full and vibrant life marked by devotion to her family and a passion for the simple joys that brought her happiness.
Phyllis was the daughter of Ralph K. Steeves and Gladys M. Steeves. She spent her formative years in Oregon and graduated from Hillsboro High School in Hillsboro in 1956. Her early adult life was shaped by a strong work ethic and a commitment to caring for others-qualities that would define both her professional and personal life.
In the 1970s, Phyllis worked as a unit secretary at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Her dedication and attention to detail made her an invaluable part of the hospital team. In the 1980s, she transitioned into human resources, serving as the Human Resource Director at the Red Lion Inn in Eugene. Her ability to connect with people and foster supportive environments left a lasting impression on those she worked with.
Phyllis was married Duane Murray for 65 years, with whom she shared many cherished years. Together they raised three children: Kathy Compton (husband Don Compton), Kristen Reed-Pearson (husband David Pearson), and Greg Murray. Phyllis took great pride in her role as a mother and later as a grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Felicia Normandin (husband Eric Normandin), Nicolas Goans (partner Laura Hartley), Ashley Paskanik (husband Adam Paskanik), Thomas Reed (wife Veronica Reed), and Monica Murray. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren: Niles Paskanik, Nash Paskanik, and Thomas Reed.
Phyllis also leaves behind her brother Stan Steeves and his wife Sophia Steeves.
Family was always at the heart of Phyllis's life. She treasured time spent with loved ones-especially during summer camping trips when her children were young-and found joy in visits to the Oregon coast. These moments became treasured memories that reflected her love for togetherness and nature.
Her hobbies reflected her creative spirit and appreciation for beauty. She enjoyed floral arranging, collecting crystal and dolls, cooking from her extensive collection of cookbooks, reading, and shopping on QVC and HSN for treasures that delighted her. Each interest spoke to her warmth, curiosity, and flair for making everyday life special.
Phyllis's presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those who loved her and inspiration to those who carry forward the values she held dear.
