Born in Redfield on March 23, 1926, Phyllis was the fifth of nine children of Emma (Oechsle) and Perry Compton. Phyllis spent her entire life in Redfield and always told of the many antics of the Compton clan. Apparently, they were known throughout Redfield. Phyllis graduated from Redfield High School in 1945.
On June 6, 1946, Phyllis married Kenneth L. Pribble in Redfield. This was an adjustment for Kenny as he was an only child. To this union, three daughters were born: Gloria Ruth, Cheryl Lynn, and Kerry Kim. Mom always used your full name, something most parents only do when you are in trouble, so the girls never really knew when they were in trouble.
Phyllis was an accomplished seamstress and sewed for many of the ladies in Redfield. She went on to work at many locations that are no longer here - JCPenney, Ken's Super Valu, Trumbo Eye Doctor, Lola's Dress Shop, Sjodin Fabric Center, and ending with the South Dakota Development Center. There she did all things from making straight jackets to upholstering furniture, and finished that career by caring for residents in the dorm.
Phyllis had many talents, she made many stuffed bears, but above all, she was a quilter. Her family has many quilts that were all made with loving care. She also became an accomplished rosemaler, a Scandinavian decorative folk painting. She also dabbled in watercolor and oil paintings.
Phyllis spent the last four years at the Eastern Star Home, where many kind souls cared for her.
Phyllis was a member of the Redfield Methodist Church.
Phyllis is survived by her three daughters: Gloria Ruth (Michael) Beyer of DeSmet, SD; Cheryl Kimlicka of Redfield; and Kerry (Scott) Dawson of rural Redfield. Phyllis is also survived by her grandchildren: Shane Taylor, Amy Ann Vermeulen, Jeremiah Kimlicka, Marie Kimlicka, Jake Dawson, Lindsey Moulton; sister Shirley Mae Solheim of Redfield; 14 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, spouse Kenneth, son-in-law Leon "Butch" Kimlicka, grandson Joshua Kimlicka, great-grandson Zach Vermeulen, and siblings: Mary Jane Liefsen, Ruth Schroeder, Billie Compton, Betty Compton, Bobbie Compton, Alice Carr, and Ada Rae Christman.
