Phyllis Weeks (1927–2025) Obituary lovingly written by Phyllis's family: Phyllis Ann (McCord) Weeks was born to Jane and George McCord on March 12, 1927, on the dining room table of the Topeka family home at 15th Street and Collins. She attended Randolph Elementary, Boswell Jr. High, and was the first of three generations to attend Topeka High School, where she excelled in social activities including cheerleading and where she was voted homecoming queen. She worked in the administrative offices while attending high school and used the money after she graduated in 1945 to attend Washburn University. Phyllis blossomed in her college years, where she was made Dandelion Queen and a member of Alpha Phi sorority. She attended WU for over 3 years, until she met and married Don Weeks on June 6, 1949. In August of 1950, she began her most important career as a mother following the birth of her first son Kent (1950-2005). Three more children followed: Eric (1951–1953), Terri (1954–) and Stacy (1958–). The family moved to Mulvane and 22nd Park where Phyllis lived from 1958 to 2019. As an active stay-at-home mom, Phyllis attended numerous school activities, served as room mother, girl scout and cub scout leader, and block mother, and for many years supported the junior golf program at Shawnee Country Club. Phyllis was an avid and skilled golfer, and dutiful golf wife at Shawnee Country Club, and a proud founding member of the LEGS women's golf association. She won many tournaments, taught and cheered on her children in golf and swimming, and could be found almost every Friday night at couples' golf with Don, tearing it up on the course then dancing the night away at the club's patio soirees. After the kids left home, Phyllis rejoined the workforce, working for Don's mortgage company and the state legislature among several temporary jobs. She finally settled into a much-loved administrative position with the Development Department at Washburn University for 20 years. Throughout her life, Phyllis managed to pursue many creative interests: oil painting, clothes- and jewelry-making, caning chairs, braiding rugs, refinishing furniture, cooking, and gardening. An avid antiquer, estate sale enthusiast, and clothes horse, she had an inimitable style and impressive collection, which she would gladly and often pass on to her daughters and friends. Phyllis was ferociously fond and proud of her children and grandchildren – supportive and enthusiastic about their lives and pursuits. Over the last decade, she was blessed to get to know her great-grandchildren with equal love and affection. Phyllis was accepting, progressive and loyal to her family and friends. She loved life, artistry and homemaking. She brought the good times wherever she went and was the consummate host for all occasions – from Saturday lunches with the girls, to intimate dinners on one of her many dining room tables, to large backyard holiday fêtes. She marshalled travel with her family for summers in Colorado or to visit her son and daughter in Chicago. She loved going to Big Lots every Wednesday with life-long best friends Ellen and Jeanne, and later in life with Stacy and Terri – an always storied and often uproarious weekly outing. Wherever she went, Phyllis always delivered laughs, wisdom, astute, and often unfiltered advice, and plenty of sass. Her voice, love, presence and being will live forever in our hearts. Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents, Jane Esther Neé Brandon and George Dewey McCord, sister Betty Jane Lemon, husband of 56 years, Donald Clay Weeks, and sons, Kent Brandon and Eric Alan Weeks. Phyllis is survived by her daughters, Terri (Ted) Jowett, and Stacy Weeks; daughter-in-law, Pat Weeks and son-in-law Jim Landuyt; grandchildren, Shannon (Tom) Jowett, Travis Jowett, Chad (Chloe) Jowett, Brandon Weeks, Joey (Emily) Landuyt, Tyler (Kyler) Landuyt, and Riley (Jaimie) Landuyt; great-grandchildren Asher and Jacob; and step great-grandchild Charlie. Phyllis's family extends deepest gratitude to all those who helped care for Phyllis in later life, including the team at Lexington Park Independent Living, especially Lisa, night-time caregiver, Crystal, Midland Care Hospice and Cedarhurst Assisted Living. Visitation will be at 2 p.m. with memorial service to follow at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614.
