P.J. Powers Obituary

Dr. P.J. Powers
June 14, 1952 - May 12, 2024
Dr. P.J. Powers was born in Charlottetown, PEI on June 14, 1952. He completed his undergraduate studies at Dalhousie University, medical school at Memorial University, his pediatric residency at McGill University, and neonatology at Cornell University Pediatrics. He was an attending neonatologist for over 40 years in Tennessee, New York, Florida, and California.
He passed on May 12, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wonderful son, Andrew; wife, Anne Marie Tallent; siblings Mary, Edward, George (Lorraine), Barbara, and Ellen; and many nieces and nephews including his goddaughters, Kate and Mary Ellen. He will be forever grateful to the staff at CPMC and UCSF for their compassionate care.
The St. Francis Prayer was his favourite because of his scientific work: "Seek not to be understood but to understand." He loved his dogs, trips to the beach, gardening, and listening to vinyl records. His hunger for knowledge, love of life, and kindness to others left a lasting impression on all those who met P.J. and he cherished every friend he made.
There will be a brief service at Daniels Chapel of the Roses in Santa Rosa on Friday, May 17 from 4-8 pm, and a final service and burial in Albany, NY through Magin and Keegan Funeral Home.

I was also a member of MUN Med School Class of '78. The first day there I met Pius & he was reading Tristam Shandy & I knew right away he was an exceptional guy. Shandy was too weird for me though! He became good friends with my best friend, Dr. Ann Roberts. Here we all are (me in aviators) in a picture clearly from the 70s. Pius & I reconnected in January 2024 & spent hours late at night texting about tea, dogs, the environment & everything else. He was always brave & optimistic. I miss those conversations. I miss his mind. My deepest condolences go out to his family for their great loss. I've already planted a 3 foot sugar maple in my "urban meadow" (formerly my front lawn). It's in a really sunny spot & will blaze with color this autumn. He would approve.

I met P.J. Powers years ago via mutual friends. He seemed a regular down to earth person. He was understated. Sympathies to all his loved ones and associates.

PJ was an amazing neonatologist and a very special friend. God sent him to St Peters Hospital in Albany, New York one day to look for some per diem work. My response was: Let's make it full-time. He accepted. What an amazing contribution he made during his time with us. He was one of the best doctors I ever had the pleasure of working with. He could talk on any subject medical or other. Most of all he was a good human being who truly cared. His visits will be greatly missed. Rest in peace PJ.
