Polly Sue Bumpurs, of Old Union, passed away at Scott and White Hospital in Temple on Sunday, December 11, 2022, at age 76.
Visitation will be held at Groesbeck Funeral Home from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 15, 2022.
Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, December 16, 2022, at Seale-Round Prairie Cemetery, with Reverend Bill Sutton officiating.
Polly was born July 9, 1946, to John Gilbert Hughes and Ruby Madelle (Engram) Hughes in Groesbeck. She grew up at Old Union and graduated from Groesbeck High School in the Class of 1964, and continued her education, receiving an Associates' degree from Navarro College in Corsicana.
After Polly met Harold Bumpurs when he visited family in the area, they were united in marriage just before he went into military service. She moved to Georgia while he was in training, and then after he served a year in Vietnam, he was stationed at Fort Hood. Their daughter was born while they were living there. After his honorable discharge, they made their home in the Groesbeck area for the remainder of their lives.
Polly worked at Mexia State School and continued her education, receiving her Bachelors' degree from Tarleton State University, after traveling to Stephenville for many weekends and to Waco for night classes. She received her Masters' degree from Stephen F. Austin, traveling to Nacogdoches with a van full of coworkers every week.
Polly treated all the clients she worked with at Mexia with respect and dignity, not just as a patient. For more than half of her career, Polly traveled all over the United States taking clients to the Special Olympics in various states.
Polly worked for 45 plus years at the Mexia State School, retiring first in 2018, and then after working a few more years, she retired finally. Anyone who had worked with her said she was the hardest working person doing anything needed; even when she was the boss, she would mop the floor if needed.
Polly enjoyed shopping for shoes and shopping for a new car frequently. She enjoyed driving around at the lake to watch the deer, and she especially enjoyed playing with her dog (as she always had a poodle.) She was a great sister who did everything she could to help her sisters and make life easier for her family. She was very giving and compassionate; had a positive attitude about what was right or wrong; and very patriotic.
Polly was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold Bumpurs in 2013; and her brothers, Joe "Huck" Hughes and Ulmer "Rastus" Hughes.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kellye Nix and Jeremy Lindley of Old Union; sister, Patsy Green of Old Union; brother and sister-in-law, Elbert "Butch" and Alma Hughes of Oletha; and sister, Linda Meredith of Groesbeck. She has 9 nieces and nephews: Terry Strickler, Scott Green, Edgar Green, Elaine Long and husband Trent, Cynthia Noey, Kevin Hughes, Chris Meredith and wife Becky, Kolby Morgan and husband Mika, and Heather Rone and husband Scott; also, many other nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and other extended family. Also are her best friends for over 40 years, Bertha Allen and Stanley Cotton with whom she had stayed in touch, and her beloved poodle, Bubba Bumpers.
