Polly Ruth Jamison, a longtime resident of Newtown, Bucks County, passed away on Friday May 26 at age 89 at home at Pennswood Village, Newtown. Polly is survived by her son David Thomas Jamison (Cynthia) of
Cary, NC, daughter Rev. Diane Jamison Fitch (John) of Maple Glen, PA, and son-in-law Jonathan Berry (Dee) of Mechanicsburg, PA. She was the beloved Grams to her 9 grandchildren (Katy, Emily, Molly, Nathan, Katherine, Thomas, Kristen, Joshua, Caroline) and Great Grams to her 8 great-grandchildren. Polly was predeceased by her husband Walter and her daughter Linda Jamison Berry.
Polly was a woman of great faith who loved Jesus, her family and her church. She enjoyed spending time knitting, teaching children, rooting for the Phillies, planning activities, baking and serving others. Her commitment to family time was evident by the yearly gatherings she and Walt hosted – family reunions at their home in Upper Makefield Township, beach weeks at
Sea Isle City, NJ, and family weekends at Skytop Lodge. She loved making memories with her family. Polly was a lifelong member of the Newtown Presbyterian Church where she served for many years as a Sunday School teacher and leader, as well as a co-leader of the youth groups and secretary of the Historic Church committee. Polly loved investing in children's lives, whether in their spiritual formation or in their elementary education. She also served the community as a leader in the Girl Scouts.
Polly graduated from Council Rock High School and West Chester University with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. Polly stayed at home and raised her 3 children to school age, then returned to the classroom. Polly taught 3rd grade at Sol Feinstone School, part of the Council Rock School System, for more than 25 years.
Polly and Walt traveled extensively in the US and abroad. When younger, the family camped and backpacked in many National Parks. Later Polly and Walt traveled to all 7 continents with friends and family – highlights included visits to the Holy Land, Europe, China, Antarctica, Australia, African safaris and Patagonia. While in their 70s Polly, Walt and all their children's families sailed and explored the Galapagos Islands.
Polly was an accomplished painter and was very musical, she played the piano and sang. She also played in the handbell choir at her church for many years. Polly passed on her love of music to her family and rarely missed a performance of her many musical grandchildren.
A memorial service celebrating Polly's life will be held on Saturday July 1 at 11:00 am at the Historic Newtown Presbyterian Church, 76 N. Sycamore Street. The service will be followed by a luncheon. Interment will be private. Those wishing to honor her memory are encouraged to make a donation in Polly's memory to the Educational Ministries of Newtown Presbyterian Church, 25 N. Chancellor Street, Newtown, PA 18940.
