Priscilla Gossett Carroll, 76, of Athens, Georgia, passed away and transitioned to her heavenly home on Sunday, July 7, 2024.
Priscilla was born in Athens, Alabama. Her parents were Leonard W. and Pauline S. Gossett. Priscilla graduated from Athens High School in 1965 and then Athens College (now Athens State University) in 1968, majoring in elementary education. She then taught first grade at Athens Elementary School where she attended as a student.
Priscilla was an active leader at Athens College and received much recognition while there. Among these were Founders Court, Miss Athens College, Best Dressed, vice president of Phi Mu, and Sigma Tau Delta honorary English fraternity. She met Archie, her husband-to-be, in 1966, when he came to teach business management at Athens College. They were married in 1968 and moved to Tallahassee, FL in 1969 while Archie pursued his doctoral studies. Priscilla taught in Tallahassee for three years before moving to Athens, GA in 1972, when Archie took a position with the University of Georgia.
Priscilla began teaching at Oglethorpe Elementary School in1972 and completed her Master of Education degree at the University of Georgia in 1974. She taught for seven years before their son, Bradley, arrived, at which time Priscilla became a stay-at-home mother. She remained active as a volunteer for many decades to follow. Among her activities were helping to establish Community Bible Study (CBS) in Athens, which continues today. She also served as elder and teacher at First Presbyterian Church for many years and as a member of the Junior League and the Salvation Army Auxiliary.
Priscilla’s faithfulness played a significant role in her life, and she was, most recently, a member of Athens First United Methodist Church, where she served for two decades as a Bible Study leader and church school leader in the Disciples Class.
Priscilla is survived by her husband of 56 years, Archie B. Carroll, and two grandsons, Jayden Carroll and Cameron Carroll of Oxnard, CA; brothers Frank and Lyn Gossett, and sister, Alice Gossett King, of Athens, Alabama. She was predeceased by her parents and her son, Bradley Addison Carroll.
Priscilla will be lovingly remembered as an energetic, caring, kind, devoted, and faithful friend, volunteer, and relative to many, extending to family and many others.
Deep gratitude is extended to the staff of St. Mary’s Highland Hills Memory Care for their compassion, grace, and professionalism, to Agape Hospice, and to Phylis, Priscilla’s helper and friend, during the past two years.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to Community Bible Study, c/o Athens First United Methodist Church, 327 N. Lumpkin St. Athens, GA 30601 or the Salvation Army of Athens, GA, P. O. Box 367, Athens, GA 30603.
