On May 12th 1971, William Holman and Elaine Rich welcomed their bundle of joy, who they named Purlie Latrice Holman. Purlie, a chubby, bouncy and laughing baby girl that grew to bring love, joy, anger, sadness but most of all she bought to her family the understanding of overcoming, forgiveness and human kindness.
Purlie's primary education was obtained from Peshine Avenue Grammar School. She then moved on to Malcolm X Shabazz High School where she became a part of the high school cheer team (Go Bulldogs!! Black and Gold forever!!). Purlie left high school early, however in later years she would attend many avenues of learning and completed State educational certifications. Purlie was naturally gifted with the talents of song, music, hair dressing, cooking and in recent years para-professional in childcare. Purlie is also a standing member within the Eastern Star organization.
Purlie leaves us with two great lessons. The first lesson is to be brave enough to reconginze both of our internal and external demons, to trust in God as both shield and sword in spirtural and earthly battles. The second is the ability to forgive ourselves and others.
On Feburay 9th 2024, God spoke and Purlie obediently answered. She was not in pain but in a jovial prayer she joined the ranks of the saints. Purlie extended her family's lineage through the births of D'andre Holman, who was adopted by her aunts of New York, New York, Eli Holman, who was co-parented by Purlie and her sister Janet, and Ricky James who was adopted by a beautifully known Christian family. The witnesses that stand in testimony of her complicated but beautiful life are her siblings: William Holman, Kevin Holman and Janet Holman. In addition her sister/cousin Carolina Holman and life friend Roosevelt Jones, as well as a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
