R. Duane "Cap" Spangler of Bushnell, Illinois passed away at 2 PM Tuesday March 11, 2025. He was born on July 19, 1935 in Scottsburg, Illinois to Simon Cleveland and Lillian (Battin) Spangler.
He is survived and greatly missed by his wife, Linda (Hutchins) Spangler of Bushnell, IL; daughters, Kaylene Spangler of San Clemente, CA. and Marla Spangler of Highland, IL; grandchildren, Brendan Collins of Playa Del Rey, CA, Devin Collins of San Clemente, CA, Angela Collins of La Habra, CA, Taryn Collins of Benicia, CA; great-grandchildren, Nathan Graham, Jadyn Graham, Russell Loger; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and ten siblings, Ida May Kitch, Ted Spangler, Alice Whittier, George Spangler, Verle Spangler, Leona Yocum, Jean Swartzbaugh, Evelyn Griffith, Ernest (Spud) Spangler and Mary Cadwalader.
Cap graduated from BPC high school in 1953 with a full sports scholarship. He continued playing summer league sports in Bushnell and was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. He enlisted in the Illinois National Guard and served for many years. Cap worked at Ready Foods in Bushnell and later went to work at Admiral/Maytag in Galesburg as a supervisor in the plastics division where he retired in December of 1997 after 32 years of employment. Cap and Linda owned Spanglers Decorating Service in Bushnell for 30 years. Cap also farmed with his father-in-law and later on his own until 2016. Cap and Linda enjoyed many winters in Plant City, FL.
Cap was a member of T J Pickett Masonic Lodge in Bushnell for many years where he was active in fund raising events. He especially enjoyed working at the ice cream booth at the Town and Country Festival. Cap enjoyed gardening and spending time with his friends from the "Key Klub". Nine couples of high school friends who got together for picnics, vacations, and frequent card playing.
Graveside services will be at 1:00 PM Saturday March 15, 2025 at Bushnell Township Cemetery with Peggy Roberts officiating. Visitation will be Saturday March 15 from 10:00 AM- 12:30 PM at the Martin-Hollis Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers consider a contribution to the T J Pickett Masonic Lodge or the American Red. Cross.
