R. Wright Obituary

R. John Wright of Old Bennington, VT, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2025, at home, surrounded by his loving family.

John was born in Detroit, Michigan, on February 7th, 1947, to his parents, William and Lorinda (Shannahan) Wright. He shared a tight-knit bond with his siblings, William "Bill" Wright, Sharon Hoffman, and Melody Ziegler, a connection that continued into their adulthood. Together, they formed a close family that supported one another through life's challenges and joys.

John attended Wayne State University in Detroit, and in the early 1970s, he set out in his old Volkswagen "bug" with his cat, "Guff," traveling east to New England in search of his destiny. He encountered a community of craft artisans in New Hampshire, an experience that would shape the course of his life and career.

In the summer of 1972, John met Susan Marie Davidson, the woman who would become his wife and lifelong creative partner. Both were artists in their own right, each possessing a distinct sensibility and skill set. But together, they became a force. In 1976, they founded R. John Wright Dolls, melding their talents in a way that would re-define the emerging field of collectible dolls.

For 50 years, R. John Wright Dolls, has been at the forefront of the collectible doll industry. What began as a small operation in Brattleboro, VT, grew to a company employing 50 artisans in Cambridge, NY. Over the years, John negotiated licensing agreements with prominent companies, among them, The Walt Disney Co., Beatrix Potter's estate, and Warner Bros., producing dolls of characters such as Mickey Mouse, Snow White, Winnie the Pooh, Peter Rabbit, and the cast of The Wizard of Oz., all crafted with his signature attention to detail and artistry.

Beyond his work, John had a remarkable sense of humor. His wit and playful spirit were felt by everyone who knew him. To his children, he was affectionately known as "Daddy-O," His love for travel with his family-whether exploring European streets, enjoying the sun in the British Virgin Islands on Virgin Gorda, or sharing stories of trips to Japan-he brought adventure and experiences to them. John encouraged his children to pursue their dreams, and hoped that his example played a role in shaping their lives.

In 1994, the Wright family moved to a historic home in the Village of Old Bennington, VT. In 2005, R. John Wright Dolls, Inc. relocated to the area, offering employment to local residents. He had a keen interest in American history, especially the heritage of Old Bennington and the preservation of its' history.

If desired, contributions in memory of John can be made to the Bennington Museum, designated for the "Bennington 250th - Meeting House Monument Fund."

John is survived by his beloved wife, Susan, and their four children: Lillian Wright and her husband, Graeme McKenna, of Brooklyn, NY; Arthur Wright and his wife, Jamie, of South Burlington, VT; Emily Battles and her husband, Michael, of Lyme, NH; and Jack Patrick Wright of Brooklyn, NY. He was a proud grandfather to Liam McKenna, Benjamin Wright, Hannah Wright, Leo Wright, Edith Battles, Penelope Battles and Theo Battles (expected May, 2025)

A memorial service to honor John's life will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the Old First Church in Old Bennington, VT, at 11:00 AM.

John you will be deeply missed. My memory of you: Your first Alice-in- Wonderful doll was my very first "real" collectable doll. I remember showing my husband, Jorge, how stunning she was from a photo in a magazine (she took my breath away). Later, he called the Toy Shoppe and secretly inquired about her. Danny Shapiro said he did not think you were still making them even though your quota was not filled but would ask. He persuaded you/Susan to make the doll for me because Jorge was trying to be a supportive husband and you did! One more Alice was made especially for me and she was gifted to me on my 46th birthday. It was the biggest surprise ever and "launched" my new hobby collecting dolls. Then, when I saw you at the first RJW convention, it was like seeing a movie star. My life has changed for the better because of you and Susan so thank you from the bottom of my heart. And thank you for all you have done for the doll world. With a sad heart, Ann

I loved dolls from the time I was little, and began collecting in my 20s. John Wright's were my first purchase and I loved it so much, I bought many more. I found this obituary by accident and I cannot express how sorry I am to his family and all those who loved him.

He was an artist in every sense of the word. His mind was a magical place that we were all fortunate to see inside by the masterpieces that came out of both his mind and his heart. To own a piece of his work was to have a dream come true. I'm sure he inspired many around the world to follow their hearts and life's passions also.
His passing is a great loss. My deepest condolences to his loved ones.

So very sorry to hear of your families loss. My mother who was Lorinda´s sister spoke of John and his siblings. She said she would help William with childcare of John and siblings in Detroit. Although I am John´s first cousin we never had the opportunity to meet. May John rest in peace and know his legacy will go on through his creations.
