Rachel H. Horst, 92, formerly of Ephrata, entered into rest on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at the home of Ruth Newswanger, Shippensburg.
Born in Leola, she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Barbara (Hoover) Reiff and the wife of the late Amos Z. Horst, who passed away in April of 2010.
As a homemaker, Rachel found much joy in helping others, being a mother to Fresh Air children, the children she babysat and was very involved in caring for her nieces, nephews and grandchildren. She made comforters to be sent overseas and enjoyed volunteering at Fairmount. She was a member of Groffdale Mennonite Church, Groffdale Conference.
She is survived by her son, Mervin (Barbara Snyder) of Ephrata and daughter, Brenda Zimmerman of Ephrata; 13 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 4 siblings, Mary H. Hoover of Ephrata, Martha H. Burkholder of Elkhart, IN, Paul (Fannie Burkholder) of Elma, IA, Rueben (Ella Zimmerman) of Ephrata; two sisters-in-laws, Lydia Reiff of Ephrata and Eva Reiff of Walnut Bottom.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Rachel was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara, two brothers, James and Amos and a son-in-law Elvin Zimmerman.
The family extends a special thank you to Eva Reiff, Ruth Newswanger and the many other caregivers for their kind and compassionate care to Rachel.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, October 12, 2025, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM, at the Brenda Zimmerman residence, 321 North Hershey Avenue, Leola. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 13, 2025, at 9 AM, from the residence, with further services at 9:30 AM, at Groffdale Mennonite Church, 90 Groffdale Church Road, Leola, with Bishop Ammon Weaver officiating. Interment will take place in the adjoining church cemetery.
