Rachel Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service - Ahoskie Chapel on Feb. 28, 2026.
WHITAKERS, NC - Rachel Ann Smith, aged 82, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 26, 2026, in her home in Whitakers, North Carolina, surrounded by her loving family. Born on March 25, 1943, in Bertie County, North Carolina, Rachel was the daughter of the late Minton Smith and Hazel Miller Smith.

Rachel spent her career as an Administrative Assistant at CPA offices of Pittard, Perry, and Crone, where she dedicated many years of hard work until her retirement. Beyond her professional life, Rachel had numerous passions that brought joy to those around her. She was known for her love of gardening and could often be found tending to her yard. A devoted member of the Silver Sneakers of the local Y, she enjoyed line dancing, exercising, and walking, cherishing the friendships she made along the way. Rachel had a special bond with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, never missing an opportunity to watch them play sports and celebrate their achievements.

A faithful member of the Sunset Church of God in Tarboro, North Carolina, Rachel treasured her church family and attended services as often as she could until she could no longer drive. An avid basketball fan, she delighted in watching games.

Rachel is predeceased by her parents, Minton and Hazel Smith, and her siblings, Charlie and Edward Smith, and Ruby Mince. She is survived by her daughters, Michelle Brinkley and husband Steve of Greenville, and Kim Lassiter and husband Johnnie of Winton. Rachel leaves behind cherished grandchildren: John Harrell and wife Hunter, David Harrell and special friend Macy Ward, Adam Brinkley, Travis Brinkley and wife Courtney; and adored great-grandchildren Peyton, Landon, Beckham, Hadley Brinkley, and Harper Harrell. Her sister, Mary Skinner, and brother, Andrew Smith and wife Renell, mourn her loss, along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Williamston and Tarboro Gentiva Hospice for their compassionate care during Rachel's illness.

A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at 3:00 pm at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service Chapel, officiated by Rev. Randy Miller and Rev. Jody Harrison. Her family will receive friends immediately following the service in the visitation room of the funeral home.
