Rafael H. Oropeza, a cherished husband, devoted grandfather, and a true cowboy at heart, passed away on October 17, 2025, at the age of 68. He was born on June 9, 1957 in San Isidro, Chihuahua, Mexico the son of Rafael Oropeza Esparza and Julia Hernandez Lira. He married Yolinda "Yoli" Arias on December 27, 1986. He is reunited with "La Leona" as she preceded him in death on March 9, 2025.
For over 35 years, Rafael's days were spent in the saddle, working as a cowboy for various feedyards. Enjoyed garage sales, "cruising" and dancing with his beloved wife Yoli. Rafael's humor was a gift he generously shared with all who knew him. His ability to give everyone a nickname was legendary, and those nicknames often stuck for life, a testament to his knack for capturing someone's essence in a playful moniker. This same playful spirit made him a formidable opponent at the pool table.
Above all, the role that brought Rafael the most joy was that of a grandfather. He instilled in them the values of hard work, the importance of a good joke, and the skill of living life to the fullest.
Survivors include his Children- Joseph (Claudia) Arias, Andrea Arias, Cecelia (Robert) Oropeza, Joaquin Ortega, Benjamin Ortega & 3 additional children in California; 8 grandchildren; Siblings- Arjelia Oropeza and Jose Luis Oropeza & numerous Nieces and Nephews. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his Parents; Son- Rafael Oropeza Jr; Siblings- Antonio Oropeza, Ramon Oropeza, Margarito Oropeza, Jesus Oropeza, Virginia Oropeza, & Elisa Oropeza.
Visitation will be held 1:00-6:00 pm Sunday October 19, 2025 and 11:00 am – 8:00 pm Monday October 20, 2025 both at Garnand Funeral Home of Lakin, Kansas. A Rosary will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday October 21, 2025 at St. Anthony Catholic Church followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 with Rev. Peter Tran as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Deerfield Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to the Rafael Oropeza Memorial Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home 412 N 7th Street, Garden City, KS 67846 620-276-3219
