Gustavo Avila Oropeza
January 21, 1957 - August 21, 2025
On August 21, 2025, Gustavo Avila Oropeza of Corpus Christi, Texas, passed away at the age of 68. He was born on January 21, 1957, in Corpus Christi to Maria Figueroa Avila (Oropeza) and Roberto P. Oropeza Sr.
From a young age, Gustavo found his passion in boxing. Known in the ring as "The Mighty Fly," he built an impressive career with over 200 amateur fights, seven professional bouts, and participated in the Junior Olympics during the 1970s. He was a well-known figure at the Corpus Christi Boys Club, and also trained at the Delta Gym in Louisiana.
After his boxing career, Gustavo worked as a driver for Yellow Cab, at the Grain Elevator, and later as a pipe fitter in Houston, Texas. He remained a man of many talents and a hard worker throughout his life.
Gustavo enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, fishing along the coast, working out at the YMCA, and volunteering at his local Catholic church. He will be remembered for his humor, confidence, and the joy he brought to those around him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Roberto P. Oropeza Sr. and Maria Figueroa Avila (Oropeza); his brothers, David Oropeza and Roberto P. Oropeza Jr.; and his son, Gustavo E. Oropeza Jr.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Lori Oropeza Lopez; grandchildren, Victoria, Jacob, and Emma Lopez, Gustavo III, Jeremiah, and Jacob Oropeza; and great-grandchildren, Xavion, Nicole, Andrea, Avery, and Jazlyn. He is also survived by his nine siblings, Linda Oropeza, Gloria O. Torres (David), Anna Oropeza, Esther O. Martinez (Rodolfo), Lupita O. Alaniz (Jaime), Angelita O. Rosales (Robert), Ernesto Oropeza, Joe Oropeza (Stephanie), and Richard Oropeza (Bettye), along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Gustavo will be dearly missed but forever remembered in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Gustavos’s family will receive condolences on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at Treviño Funeral Home, 3006 Niagara St., from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM; with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 29, 2025, at Holy Family Catholic Church at 10:00 AM. Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
